Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Overview

Optimized for close-up shooting, the EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM from Canon mixes a comfortable short telephoto focal length with a short working distance. Short telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 160mm equivalent focal length.
Ideal for macro shooting, this lens offers a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 1' to suit working with close-up subjects.
One ultra-low dispersion (UD) element greatly reduces chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Three-group floating elements system along with an internal focusing design helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range.
Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to two different ranges for faster focusing performance: 1'-infinity and 1.6'-infinity.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Optional rotating tripod collar is available and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

question

I've been reading lots of reviews on Macro lenses in the 90-105mm focal length, and I seem to sense that in this focal length range the better it is to look for one with image stabilization. There'll be times when I can use a tripod and not need it, but I like to be able to handhold when I'm out hiking and don't want to lug a tripod with me. I usually stick with Canon lenses since I have an EOS 70D, but I also like affordability. What would be your recommendation between a Sigma macro lens with OS and a Tamron macro with VC in the focal length range I'm interested? I'm pretty sure I want to do more in the macro field as I look for new areas to try and think that I'd feel better about using a designated lens over a close-up lens.
Asked by: Anonymous
VC or IS is useless for macro work due to the extreme magnification that you're working with. learn macro shooting techniques. Or if you have a newer body crank up ISO to get fast shutter speed. The best option is to use tripod with remote trigger

How do I make the whole piece of whatever I am trying to take a picture of focused instead of just pieces of it? No focusing option.. Confused lol
Asked by: Megan
When shooting close-ups with the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens you should stop the lens down to f/16 to f/32. This will give you more depth of field. You should also focus 2/3rd back on your subject.

question

Hi, it says in specifications that the tripod collar is Optional Removable. Does that mean that a tripod collar fits on the lens, or that when you buy this lens you get one?
Asked by: Anonymous
The lens does not come with a tripod collar. It is an optional accessory that will fit on the lens. http://bhpho.to/1lbW0Il

question

What is the working distance in Macro? Is it less than a foot?
Asked by: Anonymous
The minimum focusing distance of this lens is right at 1 ft. Keep in mind that distance is from the camera sensor to the subject, not the front of the lens to the subject.
