Westcott 2012 overview

  • 1Description

This is a Westcott 32" Convertible Umbrella. Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a softbox.

Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.

Westcott umbrellas are rated safe for use with hot lights up to 1000 Watts.
This size is perfect for a 1 person head shot, or 3x4 ft product setup.

Westcott 2012 reviews

Umbrella - White Satin, Black-32" is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 28.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for smaller studios Great, compact, versatile and solidly built umbrella. I also own the 43 collapsible version also from Westcott and in some situations, that umbrella is just too big to when working with smaller subjects. This is where the 32 comes in handy. I also like that the ribs are on the inside, as I typically use this umbrella in 'shoot-thru' mode, and the ribs aren't as noticeable on reflective subjects. I do wish it had a collapsible shaft like its big brother to make transporting it easier. But unlike the 43, it does have a 'solid tip' end to prevent it from being pinched.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than others The Westcott reversible 32 umbrella is much better constructed than other umbrellas I've purchased. The shaft appears to be of stronger metal and thicker than others and the little flexing connectors are metal instead of plastic (these broke on my last umbrella). I also like how quickly I can pull off the black cover. Only the metal tips on the black cover hold it on. The point on the end of the my last umbrella had to be screwed on. I'm quite happy with my purchase and glad I bought two of them for my mobile/speedlight kit. Portraits and headshots on location couldn't be easier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yes I would buy this again for my purpose. I needed a strong umbrella to simple keep shade and water off my camera and wireless transmitter while the gear was mounted to a wakeboard boat driving 22 mph. And it did just that. This umbrella is extremely durable and strong. I can not help with how these work with photo gear and lighting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to set-up , break-down This is a very well made umbrella for the price. The shaft is made from solid metal and is painted black so it doesn't dent or scratch like my other umbrellas. The interior is a satin silver/white that doesn't produce any color shifts. The Black cover is easily removed although it might take you a couple of minutes the first time you try it. This umbrella was made for photography, it is not a regular rain umbrella that was modified, so I'm sure it will last a bit longer. I like the size of 32, perfect for individual portraits and couples, plus it's easier to carry and set up than the 45 or 60 sizes. If you place your light-source towards the end of the shaft you have a 32 light which is plenty for most situations. Also, the smaller light source gives your lighting more direction.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Bang For The Buck I have no issues with this umbrella at all. It's extremely affordable and does what it's meant to. I've definitely worked with flimsier umbrellas in the past, and this one is good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from FAV Umbrella ever I love the smaller size - allows me to be very selective in what I'm lighting out doors. The black removable cover I use as a flag. Light is really soft when i shoot through. Just love.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Smaller Westcott I got this umbrella in an effort to keep better control in windy shooting situations. I also got a weight bag to place on my light stand.
