Kodak Portra 800 Overview

  • 1Description

Kodak's Professional Portra 800 is a high-speed daylight-balanced color negative film optimized for use in difficult lighting conditions. It has a nominal sensitivity of ISO 800/30° along with a notable underexposure latitude for effectively pushing to ISO 1600 with maintained quality and extended highlight and shadow detail. Vivid color saturation and low overall contrast contribute to pleasing skin tones and neutral color accuracy, and a micro-structure optimized T-GRAIN emulsion renders a fine grain structure with high sharpness and edge acutance. Kodak's proprietary advanced development accelerators and antenna dye sensitization also offer enhanced scanning and enlarging performance. Portra 800 is very well-suited to photographing moving subjects and working in low-light conditions while maintaining true color reproduction.

This item is five rolls of 120-format roll film.

Kodak Portra 800 Reviews

Professional Portra 800 Color Negative Film (120 Roll Film, 5-Pack) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 87.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A big surprise in a little package This was my first attempt to go above ISO 400. This roll was purchased specifically to photograph old vintage automobile fanatic's gathering. This is an evening event. Most of the vehicles considering attention normally arrive past 7 p.m. The available light is scarce and sky was cloudy. I was surprised with my results. The is very little noise, detail is well preserve in shadows and highlights. TLR was hand held. No flash was used. This is an excellent C-41 process film. I will definitely purchase few more rolls for my weekend excursions into forest or by the beach.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful portrait film I rarely shoot film at ISO 800, but since trying this film, I have found a lot of reasons to start. I absolutely love this film for portraits. The skin tones and colors are lovely. There's just enough contrast to make the photographs pop but not too much. It works beautifully for subdued landscapes in the late evening and early morning as well. The film scans very well also. Portra 800 is much nicer than the 400 NC/VC series in my humble opinion. I wish Kodak would make this exact same emulsion with a speed rating of 400 and 200 as well. I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from coolsville 2010 shaded side of building portraits with a rolleinar at f5.6-8 / 60th-125th, that's why I tried this. dof and shutter speed were too shallow or slow with other types of film. sure i could grab a tripod, but I never do. also use this with hot lights on small productions with my rolleiflex and like the uncorrected curve response to tungsten lighting. I thought this film was grainless when exposed at 640-400 but a drum scan reveals the real grain structure. ( which I like)not bad at all. Even a stop makes a huge difference , reasonable exposure times possible with lights ranging from 750w-2K's

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for available darkness I am normally a 35mm E-6 shooter, not really liking color negative film. But I wanted to do some available light color photography and have a 120 camera that I use occasionally. I loaded a roll of this in my camera, set aperture at f/3.5 and shutter at 1/25 second, and shot in available light in my kitchen (EV 5) and living room (EV 4). The kitchen shot was about 1/2 stop underexposed, and the living room shot was about 1 1/2 stops underexposed, yet the photos came out great! Would definitely recommend. The only downside is it isn't slide film, and therefore not projectable. But I know somebody who can print files to slides, so it's workable that way if I really want to project it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not what you're used to if you shoot 35mm The grain on this is amazing. I stayed away from 800 for a long time because I was so used to shooting with 35mm and I didn't want my photos to have as much grain as I was seeing, but when shooting medium format (645) it's just the right amount. Portra 800 is quickly becoming my stock film over Portra 400. Especially on these winter days with less and less light. I would gladly buy a higher film speed if they made it. I'm about to start pushing this one just cause you can.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Color Tone and Contrast I used to use Portra 400 which is an excellent film but I found it was lacking color and fell flat under certain lighting scenarios. This film when shot at 400 is absolutely amazing. It is crazy expensive but well worth it. For those used to shooting with Portra 400 this film has a little more character and has that look im going for when I shoot film which is to look like film.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shoot Weddings, Bring This Film Along I shoot weddings completely in film. This film, albeit only available in 120, is such a versatile film. I can walk inside and shoot with no problem and walk outside and overexpose the snot out of it (1.5-2 stops) and have wonderful, wonderful results. Creamy skin tones and with the right scan engineer, produces impeccable results. The grain as well is pretty fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome film! For me, this might be the only film that rivals portra 400vc. The speed and sharpness of the 800 is superb and I like the color almost as much as the VC. The portra 800 is especially useful for when I'm using telephotos on my medium format rig. And for an 800 speed film, I don't think the grain is extreme or problematic. (although I've only used it in 120)

question

What is the expiration date? The picture shows May 2011?
Asked by: Anonymous
B&H buys and sells film in bulk. In general we regularly maintain fresh film stock. All of our film is at least 6 months from expiration (typically much longer). Anytime film stock is less than 6 months from expiration we sell it in a separate section and label it as short-dated film and also price it with a slight discount (again due to the volumes we sell this rarely occurs). Unfortunately we do not have access to our inventory to hand inspect the expiration date of any of our films prior to purchase.
