Celestron 93522 Overview

This dual axis motor drive, with drive corrector capabilities, is designed for Celestron's CG-4 telescope mount.  It precisely controls the telescope's tracking speed during long, timed exposures of celestial objects, producing the best possible image sharpness.

Precision drive correction is a must for those with serious interest in astrophotography or CCD imaging.  Four speeds are available-1x (sidereal), 2x for guiding, 4x & 8x for centering.

The precision, state-of-the-art DC motor drive operates from 4 "D" batteries(not included).  The hand controller module is very compact, and fits easily in the palm of your hand.

Necessary addition

These motor drives for the CG-4 mount are a necessary addition for those learning astrophotography. Although not a perfect product (a clutch for the RA drive would be of great benefit), beginners and students can learn how to use an equatorial mount for tracking planets and deep sky objects.

Works as expected!

I've not done a true polar alignment yet, but just doing a rough polar alignment ( latitude set / point mount to true north using a compass and eyesight ) - turn the motors on - it does a good job keeping targets in view! I expect that with a true and accurate polar alignment, it would be awesome.

Inexpensive Drive for a Solid Mount

I bought this drive for my CG-4 mount to do casual observing. It assembles easily enough but the declination motor/clutch assembly has to be played with to get it into proper alignment. Things I like: Low cost, ease of use. Things I wish it had: High speed slewing, clutch mechanism for RA drive to allow manual slow motion control.

This tracker is a good choice for one who is on a tight budget! Tracks stars well if aligned well.

Would be Great if it Worked

The motor drives I received had obviously been returned and restocked, there was dirt and a small piece of grass inside the empty battery compartment and one of the cables which supplies power from the control to the motors is faulty. Each of the motors works with the cable meant for the R.A. drive, but the cable for the D.E.C. drive does not supply enough power to turn the gears. I'm waiting for a response with an ra# to exchange this for a new one that functions properly. As far as the actual product, at the $100 level it's good for the cost, kind of flimsy and cheap build but considering the cost of higher level drives this one is good and seems like it will track accurately when everything works how it is supposed to.

Great quality of life improvement

I recently purchased a Celestron XLT 150mm, and this motor goes great with the CG-4 mount. Works as expected, pretty straight forward to attach to the mount, and is a significant quality of life improvement when using the telescope. I haven't used it for astrophotography yet, but plan to. One small downside: it makes the mount a little more difficult to store when not in use since I don't want any weight resting on the motor components and it's too cumbersome to remove/attach the motor for every viewing.

Use mainly the RA motor for alignment and tracking. Does a very nice job. Dec motor is to slow even at 8x speed for anything other than basic alignment but has a clutch so one can use the manual dec control for faster speeds. Have had nice photographic results using the drive system. Easy to install and set up.

Will this work for an old cg-5 or is it cg-4 only?

Only the CG4 But It tracks fairly good with small equipment like small scope or camera with telephoto lens I use mine for solar observing

BH site says four speeds, I just got this and the manual says three speeds (2x, 4x, and 8x)... Where is just 1x (sidereal) on the controller???
Asked by: Leonard
The switch marked “2X/4X/8X” determines the rate at which the motor will move when the hand controller buttons are pressed. 2X, twice the sidereal rate, is used for guiding on a star when doing long exposure astrophotography. 4X, four times sidereal, is used for centering objects in the eyepiece; and 8X, eight times sidereal, can be used for centering objects in the finder scope as well as the eyepiece. Sidereal is the 4th speed.
