Rated 5 out of 5 by from Meade Series 4000 56mm Plossl Eyepiece The Meade 56mm Plossl Eyepiece is an excellent performer. It gives outstanding wide field views of open star clusters and faint deep sky objects. Works great especially with SCT Telescopes f8 or greater. I am very please with the optical quality insofar as producing true star color and maintaining sharpness to the fields edge. The metal barrel is sturdy and the exterior finish is professional in appearance, well polished. The fold down eye guard is also a very nice feature to shield out extraneous light pollution. This is a great product offered by Meade and I highly recommend including one in your eyepiece collection. Gerald - Pittsburgh

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Acres of glass The Meade 4000 56mm provides extraordinary views via my Meade LX90. The five stars I have awarded the piece is on the basis of bang for buck, providing unbeatable value for money. Is the piece better than my Tele Vue's? No of course it isn't but..... for an inexpensive eyepiece it nudges some of the viewing of the Tele Vue's. Maybe the best way I can compare is by use..... when focusing on a wide field the Meade 56mm is the first eyepiece I reach for, that's high praise as all my other eyepieces are Tele Vues! Once the field has been captured, of course there are better eyepieces. The Meade continues to enjoy a place in my armary because.... I enjoy using an inexpensive lens that performs so well. Take care! This is a very heavy eyepiece!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dollar for Dollar a great value and top performer I was looking for a low power eyepiece to use in My C8 and C9.25. This Meade performs very well especially on open clusters such as NGC 457 and NGC 884/869. In fact, the entire double cluster fits in the field of view with plenty of room to spare (42X in the 9.25) There is a little bit of distortion at the edges, but at this price and with this field of view who cares? This will be a go-to eyepiece for clusters and star parties... who wants a bunch of fingerprints on a televue anyway? Speaking of Televue, having had the 55mm plossl , this seems to be every bit as good for a Plossl and it is a huge bargain by comparison.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Eyepiece for the price This is my 1st 2 inch eyepiece and I finally got to use this eyepiece on my 6 Mak Cas 1800mm. The 56mm eyepiece is great since I have such a long focal length on the tube, the image was better than any 1.25 eyepiece I had before (mid level), the eye relief is better than expected and the clarity was also more than expected. I was able to capture the whole moon within the FOV of this eyepiece, whereas with the 28 i would only get about 3/4 of the moon in the FOV. I would also recommend it during alignment and calibration because it gives a good wide view to locate and center the object. For the price I would recommend it and not worry about low quality. I believe this is 1 step up from the generic eyepiece that is provided with the scope.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice eyepiece for the money I'm using this with an 8 scope for terrestrial viewing because of the fairly wide field it supplies at a very reasonable cost. Depth of field is a bit shallow but acceptable. Only downside is Meade no longer includes end caps for this eyepiece. It came in a Meade branded box housed in a plastic bag. A penny saved is a penny earned?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great value for long focal length telescopes only. Read this This is an incredibly well priced eyepiece for a special set of telescope owners - those with long focal length scopes such as 8 or larger Schmidt-cassegrain or Maksutov (f/10 to f/13) telescopes. With such a long focal length scope this eyepiece produces very low magnifying power and relatively wide field of view. A full degree or more. But the downside of low magnifying power is the resulting very large exit pupil in any scopes with focal lengths shorter than 80 inches. Any exit pupil size larger than about 5 to 7mm maximum is a total waste of telescope aperture. So this eyepiece is handy for owners of (for example) common. SCT's from 8 to 14. But it would be a huge waste for shorter focal length scopes such as an 8 f/6 reflector. I happily use this eyepiece in my 8 f/10 SCT for wide-field views at a very modest price.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Does NOT include case I received the first one of these, but it came without the helicoid plastic case so, after discussions with customer service at B&H and Meade (who could not locate a case) I returned it and ordered a second one. It arrived without a case as well, so I will be returning it as soon as possible. On top of that, the eyepiece itself seemed to have significant coma outside the central viewing area. The viewing experience of a 2 low-power eyepiece was nice, but not as good as expected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So much better than expected My expectations were low considering the under $60 price. A competitor's 55mm eyepiece is going for for $200. I tried the Meade 56mm Plossl on my C14 and I was completely pleased with the sharpness and contrast I was getting observing a bright gibbous moon. I don't feel like I had to give up anything with this purchase. I highly recommend this eyepiece for long local length telescopes.
