Excellent eyepiece

This is a well matched eyepiece for the Pentax 80MM spotting scope. Eye relief makes it easy to use with glasses but the relief is better without glasses.

Disappointing

I bought this zoom lens for a Pentax PF-80ED-A 80mm Spotting Scope, expecting the image to be sharp all the way up to 63x. While it is clear and sharp at low power it is certainly not at full power. I don't think there is anything wrong with it. I think my expectations were probably too high.

Used for birding and astronomy with 80mm Pentax spotting scope. Combination produces a high quality image.

Very Nice Eyepiece, Just Wish There Was More Eye Relief

I'm using this eyepiece on a Pentax PF-80ED-A for astronomy, nature, and shooting. The brightness, contrast, colors, and resolution are excellent both night and day. The view is perfectly sharp nearly to the edge of the field at all zoom settings. On the outer edge of what Pentax calls the Cup, there is a rubber ring that protects eyeglasses from scratches. It can be rotated to provide adjustable eye relief. The part of the eyepiece that enters the scope has notches that align with a pin in the scope. This keeps the eyepiece from rotating when the zoom ring is turned. With the Cup extended, this eyepiece is large! Excluding the part that enters the scope, it's almost 4-1/4 long and about 2-1/2 in diameter. Weight is about 1 lb. If the air is steady and conditions are bright enough, views at 60X are stunning. It's hard to imagine how much detail you can actually see. However, you will need a VERY steady tripod to use this much power. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because of the somewhat limited eye relief. If I adjust the Cup all the way down, I can use this eyepiece with glasses, but only about half of the field is visible.

Great eyepiece for the PF-80ED spotting scope

I use this for viewing wildlife or paper targets at distances from 100 yards to 400 yards. In combination with the Pentax PF-80ED spotting scope, this product has given excellent image quality under a wide range of light conditions. Brightness of image, contrast, colors, and resolution are all exceptionally good. I've owned this combination for over a decade and have never felt any need to upgrade further. At 100 yards, with this optic dialed to it's 8 mm setting (60X for the combination with the 80mm scope), it is easy to clearly identify things as small as flies against the white background of a target. It is very easy to determine whether scoring rings have been touched or broken. At 300 yards it is easy to score deer on the Boone & Crockett scale with a little experience. As is true with any high magnification optic, it is essential to have a stable base. I use a heavy Bogen tripod. I can't think of a thing that I do not love about this eyepiece when used with my Pentax PF-80EF spotting scope. It is a rugged, well built, optically excellent product. I would buy it again, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to a friend or relative.

Some reviewers say, if you get this eyepiece with PF-65EDA, it doesn't fit into the provided case for the scope. Is that right?
Asked by: Cuneyt
The case included with the Pentax PF-65EDAII 65mm Spotting Scope was designed to be used with the open back or fully closed depending on the size of the eyepiece attach to the scope. You would not be able to fully closed the bag when attaching Pentax SMC 8-24mm Zoom Eyepiece. The lenght of the case on the outer curve is 16.5''. The case has 2 zippers, 1 will give you access to the tripod mount. The second one will allow access to mount your eyepiece.
