Wimberley Arca Sidekick Ball to Gimbal Head Adapter
Key Features
  • Converts Ball Head to Gimbal Head
  • Easily Reposition Big Telephoto Lenses
  • Quick and Easy to Attach
  • Ideal for 300mm, 500mm, etc. Lenses
Only 1.3 lb and compact enough to pack, the Arca Sidekick Ball to Gimbal Head Adapter from Wimberley quickly converts any ballhead with an Arca-style quick release clamp into a gimbal head. This allows the lens to rotate around its center of gravity, dramatically improving handling and vibration dampening.

Your percentage of 'keeper' shots will definitely go up using this device with telephotos with a tripod collar. Ideal for 300mm f/2.8 or 500mm f/4.5 lenses, but also works great with 70-200/f 2.8 telephoto zooms or macro lenses with tripod collars such as the 180mm f/3.5 & 400mm f/5.6's made today. When the tripod collar is fitted in the Sidekick properly, you will have perfect 50/50 weight distribution, making movement of the lens and camera finger-light!

The Sidekick, when combined with an appropriate ballhead with an Arca-type quick release clamp & independent panning lock as well as an appropriate quick release plate (required and available separately), makes for an incredible combination to provide control of spotting scopes. This is likely the best possible scenario for tracking a bird in flight, but will require a spotting scope with a rotating tripod collar in order to be ergonomically practical.

A quick-release plate is required when using this adapter.

Note: In some cases it is necessary to add spacers to the adapter. Please click here for the Sidekick/Lens Reference Chart.

question

Has anyone used this with a RRS BH-40 w/ the full size Lever clamp? BH-40 LR II
Asked by: Frederick A.
It does work, but stability suffers a bit compared to using a larger head. I find the lack of stability on the RRS BH-40 shows in my images when I reach focal lengths beyond 500mm using the Tamron G2 or Sigma Sport 150-600 zooms. Of course some of that could be the inherent softness in those lenses when nearing max focal length...

question

Hi. Will the Wimberley SK-100 work with the Mefoto Roadtrip tripod (aluminum A1350Q1R), Nikon D750 and Tamron 150-600mm G2 equipment? Thanks!
Asked by: William L.
No, in fact the head on that tripod will be a bit weak to support the weight, a recommended alternative would be the Induro BHD2 Ball head with those legs to achieve better performance with your equipment. B&H # INBALLHD2

Can the clamp be replaced with an RRS B2-LR-II lever clamp? I know the clamp on Wimberley's full gimbal can be replaced with the RRS PG-CC; wondering if there's a similar solution for the SideKick?
Asked by: David
Unfortunately, according to the manufacturer, the clamp on the Wimberley Arca Sidekick Ball to Gimbal Head Adapter cannot be replaced with a Really Right Stuff B2-LR-II lever Clamp.

question

will this attach to any tripod with removable ball head
Asked by: Anonymous
This attaches to a head that has an Arca-Swiss style quick release clamp. The tripod does not need a head that comes off as long has it has that type of tripod head. But the head and tripod need to be able to support a decent amount of weight.

Short answer, yes. Always good to check the total weight of the Sidekick + camera + lens and make sure it works with the B5, but for most use cases you ought to be fine.
