Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4D IF-ED Overview

Marrying long reach with a modest form factor, the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4D IF-ED from Nikon is a versatile telephoto prime featuring an f/4 maximum aperture that affords a useful balance between speed and a lightweight design. The 10 elements, six groups optical layout contains a pair of extra-low dispersion elements, which help reduce color fringing and chromatic aberration in order to achieve greater clarity and color accuracy. A Super Integrated Coating is also featured, and helps suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color neutrality in harsh lighting conditions. Complementing the optics, this lens also sports a Silent Wave Motor that offers quick, quiet focusing performance to suit photographing fast-moving subjects.

Telephoto prime is designed for FX-format F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 450mm equivalent focal length range.
Two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Compatible with optional AF-S Teleconverter TC-14, TC-17, and TC-20 teleconverters.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4D IF-ED Reviews

Great optics and super sharp image quality

This is one of the best 300mm lenses that Nikon has manufactured. Image quality is as good as Nikon 300mm f2.8. I use both the versions and I cannot distinguish the image quality. It is well built, lighter and easy to carry. It works perfectly in low light condition. Nikon could have redesigned this lens by adding VR, replacing ultrasonic focusing and collapsible lens hood.

Tripod ring was damaged, hood loose

I bought this lens Refurbished by Nikon from B&H. The lens optics seem clear and sharp. All the reviews I read said it was sharp and I believe that is true. But for the lens I bought from B&H, the tripod ring was bent and damaged so it was very hard to use. The tightening knob was bent at the threaded portion and turned with a lot of difficulty. It was as if the lens had been dropped on the knob, bending it at the thin threaded portion. I managed to straighten the bent threads but risked breaking the thin shaft due to metal fatigue. Once that was solved the ring around the lens rotated very roughly, indicating it might wear out quickly. Nikon is noted in reviews for having weak tripod collars on many of their best big lenses. Eventually I bought a Really Right Stuff tripod collar to solve the problems of this lens. The lens hood relies on friction to stay put, whether it is recessed or extended. The lens hood I got is loose where it seats, allowing it to move and shift. I was surprised and disappointed to receive this lens in such poor physical condition, sold as a Refurbished by Nikon product with no other notes or condition statements from B&H. You can't buy this lens new anymore, since it's been upgraded to use a PF element. So your only chance to get this lens is as a used lens. If you find a new one, buy it and take good care of the exterior moving parts.

I really wanted to like this

I got a refurbished copy of this lens. I really wanted to like it. But the AF seemed to not be working right. It just really had a hard time locking on to subjects with my D7500. Was running it in AF-C, single point center. Even in great light, I had a very hard time locking onto stationary subjects with contrast. Probably 20 percent of the time I would get sharp images. Even fine tuned it. The AF motor made a strange noise all the time. Now, when it would lock on, the images were very sharp and wonderful color rendering. But, I just didn’t take a chance after seeing the performance so I sent it back. BH of course did a great job with the return- no questions asked. Don’t know now what to do. Shell out more money for a 300pf, a new 300 AF-S, or just try a 200-500 5.6. Decisions.......

Better than Nikon 300PF

First I bought the Nikon 300PF. Yes it’s smaller and lighter, and has VR...but the image rendering is not ready for prime time. So I returned it, got this one and couldn’t be happier. It’s only slightly bigger than the PF and image rendering is beautiful. Sharp, microcontrast, and bokeh are all there in spades. It’s more affordable, built like a tank and made in Japan.

Happy with purchase.

My Go-To lens for Bird Photography

I use this lens together with a 1.4x Tele-converter for two different Nikon bodies: D7000 and D810. It works superbly with both DX and FX bodies. I took thousands of hand-held shots with very little effort. Unless otherwise it is too dark, the lens usually focuses fast and produces sharp enough photos. For any bird enthusiast, I will recommend this glass together with 1.4x tele-converter. You will not be regretting for a moment. I will even prefer this combination (as this is a prime glass) over Nikon 200-500mm glass.

Renders sharp images!

I used this on a D850 for a few years as my exclusive lens. It was such a spectacular lens on that body - super sharp imagery, colorful renditions (even more contrasty than the more modern 300mm PF lens if you can believe that) and a focus system that I never found lacking even when shooting sprints in Track. If I ever switch back to Nikon again I would pick this back up in a heartbeat.

A very solid performer w/o issues.

I purchased this 300mm F4 Nikon because it does not have the issues like the newer 300mm F4E PF lens. With a 14EII teleconverter and D500, let's go to the Air Show or Bird Sanctuary. Great lens! Great price!

How well does this lens do shooting night time football or softball games under the lights?
Asked by: Lisa
With an f4 aperture, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4D IF-ED Lens works well in low light such as high school sports at night. But expect to boost the ISO setting on the camera a little bit depending on the light quality.
