A few questions must be asked to ascertain your blurry images. You mentioned 'zoomed pictures' but have not indicated how far you zoom out. Given the D40 has a 1.5x lens factor, this lens at 300mm indicated in actually become a 450mm lens. But at an aperture of F5.6, your shutter has to be at least 1/500 second in order to hold a reasonable sharp image.The lens itself is an incredible piece of glass, some say it is the 'poor man's version of the 70-200 F2.8G. Without changing any ISO setting zoom out to its approximate values such as focal length, background brightness, etc.3. now, look through your eye piece by using your normal technique, (hand held, on tripod,etc) and see if the image in the lens oscillate even if you try your best attempt to hold it steady. Do not shoot any image at this stage, the point is for you to see what natural rhythm your own body is generating that is influencing the camera/lens/focal length combination.4. Now, take note of your shutter speed as indicated, if it shows anything less than 1/500 of a second, you stand a good chance for blurry picture.5. Now, if you use tripod but still getting blurry picture, this may be the culprit: the VR function on the lens (does your len have this function), if it is left on, it will generate its own vibration because it is seeking but find none. This little action had bedeviled many who use higher end equipment but not quite understand their function. Hope this is helpful
