Nikon ML-L3 Overview

The ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control from Nikon is a wireless shutter release capable of instantly triggering the shutter of select Nikons, without disturbing the camera, up to a distance of approximately 16' / 4.87m in front of the camera. The remote can work from behind the camera as well, however its range is not as long. It is recommended for taking pictures of subjects that are difficult to approach, or to minimize vibration for close-ups and time exposure. The ML-L3 supports the bulb exposure camera setting making it a worthwhile accessory for shooting long time exposures for low-light photography or unusual daylight effects.

Long Exposure Shooting
The ML-L3 supports the bulb exposure camera setting making it a worthwhile accessory for shooting long time exposures during low-light photography sessions, or for unusual daylight effects.

When the ML-L3 remote control is used in M mode, users can select '- -' as the shutter speed. At this setting, the shutter opens when the shutter-release button on the ML-L3 remote control is pressed (2 seconds after the button is pressed in delayed remote mode) and remains open until the remote-control shutter-release button is pressed a second time (maximum exposure time is 30 minutes). Nikon recommends using a fully-charged EN-EL3 battery or an optional EH-5 AC adapter when using long exposures. For information regarding using the ML-L3 with flash please see the camera's user manual. Basically, depress the timer 3x to get it ready, press to start the shot and step away. Come back and press the button again and it stops the shot.

ML-L3 Wireless Remote Review

Purchased the ML-L3 remote to shoot fireworks displays over the 4th. It functioned properly but I haven't used it a great deal. It does come with a battery. Use is more complicated than just pointing the remote towards the camera. I used it in conjunction with a D7500. The camera must be in manual exposure mode and Continuous Low shutter.

Purchased the remote at the same time I purchased camera batteries. B & H phone rep was super and informative and I would highly recommend making your orders by phone, as it is always good to speak to a living breathing human. There is nothing like the Human touch when it comes to ordering a product that you are not sure if it is something you really need. I appreciate honest good people when deciding on something where uncertainty is present. Thank you!

The remote didn't work out of the box. I replaced the battery and followed the Nikon Instructions to pair the Remote with the Camera, but still not change.

Used it with my Nikon 1 V3. Has the drawback that the remote must be in front of the camera for it to work. Also seems to be best for time exposure and single exposures.

Works flawless

Awesome little product anyone using a tripod should have. Lots better than the corded release. Nikon quality, just not in the instructions

Can this ML-L3 be configured to work with the SMD RFN4s receiver?.I lost the SMD RFN4s transmitter.
Asked by: Richard
I am not personally familiar with the transmitter you asked about and have only used the Nikon ML-13 with several Nikon dslr cameras. As a suggestion you might contact Nikon and/or the transmitter manufacturer to determine compatibility. Hope this helps.

IS this compatible with D850?
Asked by: P. Gray
We're afraid not. The D850 is not listed as compatible with this unit. You could look at the Vello FreeWave Plus Wireless Remote Shutter Release for Nikon instead, B&H # VERWIIN. This will work with the D850. https://bhpho.to/2iXjovx

question

is it compatible with nikon j4?
Asked by: David N.
I don't believe it is. Nikon doesn't list any remotes for the J4 on their website. But there may be some that were discontinued that may work. Check with Nikon. It's works well for my old D3000, as long as you're in front of the camera body on the right side.
