Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. This dedicated lens hood is designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Sleezy Canon moveI bought a Canon lens shade for my 28-135 lens ($) and it was fine. Then I bought a 18-200 Canon lens and I put the shade on it. Good shade and no vignetting unless you want to lock it on. The bayonet lock is offset 90 degrees so the long part of the shade is on the sides rather than on top. Vignetting.Bottom line if you want to use your old lens shade you'll have to tape it on or eat it for another$ for the same shade with the proper alignment. Sleezy, very sleezy.

Fits like a gloveHood fits nicely on my Canon EFS 18-200 Zoom lens and has a positive detent as it fully seats onto the lens bayonet mount. Looks good and the quality is great. I can still remove and replace the factory lens cap (side pinch) with the hood in place, however it would be very easy to do with one of the newer center pinch lens caps. I especially like the felt like lining on the inside of the hood that will further reduce light reflection. Granted, it is expensive compared to the after market hoods but as a friend once told me Always buy the best, that way you only cry once!

worth every dollar spent- very solid construction - fits perfectly and tightly even when in storage i.e. flipped around - I had bought a 3rd party one and its 2 clips kept getting loose so I had to push them in each time. Eventually I lost one clip and decided to spend the money to buy thisCanon product - the felt lining inside the hood helps cut down reflection too - very happy with this product

Great purchase!Got this to fit my Canon 18-200I. S. lens. I first tried PELH 72 Snap On Tulip Lens Hood, which did not allow me to attach a filter and was of poor quality. I sent the off brand hood back the NEXT day! I waited for my Canon Lens Hood...which I really LIKE. The Canon hood screws on, which also makes it more stable/ durable than the Off Brand Hood that I first tried. It was worth the wait!!! Much better quality than the off brand and you have room to attach filters. If you want the best, then buy the best...Canon!

Limited useA bit expensive for such a cheap piece of plastic and it's useless to use if you're focusing less than 50MM (shadows appear).
