Photoflex LS-Boom Reviews

Good save for QC issues

Let me preface this by saying that the concept is brilliant. This boom occupies the niche between the heavy duty but extremely weighty steel Matthews/Avenger booms, and the light but flimsy Strobist booms that are in fact repurposed reflector holders. The way this Photoflex boom extends (by putting on up to two additional sections which are joined together using grub screw spreaders), maintains its strength, instead of the collapsing-tubes-nesting-inside-each-other style of most other offerings that get progressively thinner and weaker with each extended section. This boom will take quite a bit of abuse and will handle more than just one Speedlight and a small modifier, and I'm glad I found it. However, and it could very well be just my sample and bad luck, my copy arrived with the inside of the receiver clogged with rust, and scratches along the tube caused by an improperly assembled brake. To their credit, Photoflex was apologetic and promised to double-check their stock, and B&H of course took it back no questions asked and are shipping me a replacement as I type. I would recommend this to a friend, but with a caution to check it carefully on receipt.

This boom works perfectly for the Photoflex Halfdome softbox, as a hair light, and is plenty rugged for long term use. It does reguire a counterweight however, so be sure to get one, to hang it on the end hook.

A solid boom

I own 2 of these booms, they work just great! The boom arm either fits on a photoflex boom stand, which is recomened. The boom stand is solidly built, heavy, and very sturdy. However, it does fit on a regular light stand. It is a little unsteady, but with care it works nicely. So if you're looking for a good reliable boom arm, this is the boom arm for you!!

Just remember the weights!

I use the boom, paired with the Photoflex base, as part of my portable studio set-up. I put an Alienbees 800 strobe and a Photoflex white dome nxt on it to fill the backdrop or to provide hair light. The knob for tigtening the boom with the light and box on it is awesome but it is very important to find the counterweight needed to perfectly balance the system. This will extend the life of the knob and grip and will make adjusting your lighting a lot easier.

Finally, professional equipment without a professional cost! Very happy with this boom. Works like a charm to rig a hair light (I use a med. softbox with a grid to narrow the light to a 40 degree angle). Quick assembly instructions provided. Got it up and running quickly. Used my existing Photoflex light stand as the its support--worked perfectly. Use a sand bag as my counterweight. Have to say, overall, been VERY impressed with my Photoflex purchases. Keep returning, buying more of their products.

Wanted a well made boom to add to my Speedlight location kit. This does the job.

Can someone tell me what the knob on the back end is for??? Is is just to help move the arm around or for something else?? Also does it just screw in???
Asked by: Ellen
The knob is placed on the back of the boom arm to allow you to position the arm with a more firm grip.

How does this extend from 5 feet to 6'7 it the handle on the end or do you do it manually?
Asked by: Ellen
When using all three sections of the boom arm, that will extend the arm out to 6' 7 .

Can anyone tell me if the arm slides completely out of the boom insert base where it's just the pole by itself? I know it's a silly question but I am looking to have an arm for on location shoots WITHOUT a light stand - someone holding the arm with my light modifier.

Yes, but it would be heavy.
