The front and rear surfaces of the filter both feature a single anti-reflection coating. Each coating helps to increase light transmission by reducing reflections, scattered light, and ghosting. Additionally, they offer protection to the filter substrate while helping to keep the glass clean for longer than uncoated glass.

This Heliopan filter is constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. It features a brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

A Filter for the Outdoors

This contrast filter works great for outdoor scenery on sunny days, when the number 25 light red would be too much. I use it when I am using normal exposure and normal development with my Ilford FP4+ film, which I love as much as I love this filter.

Superb Heliopan quality

I have this filter mounted on a Mamiya 43mm F4.5 lens (Mamiya 7, 6X7cm), the equivalent of a 21mm in 35mm format. The slim brass ring mount does not cause vignetting, and reliably releases without binding when changing filters. The glass filters blue light as intended, and does not add any noticeable distortion, flare, or reflections. This is an excellent filter for B&W film photography. Orange is a really great choice for B&W landscape photography. It gives nice separation of clouds from the blue sky, particularly in hazy conditions. Of course the light loss caused by this filter depends on the color of the subject and color temperature of the light, but I find this filter gives an average 2/3 stop loss for typical outdoor scenes illuminated by direct sunlight. For the Mamiya 7, which is not TTL metering, I give +2/3 exposure compensation.
