Sigma 20mm f/1.8 Overview

  • 1Description

This 20mm is a Super wide-angle lens with a large aperture of f/1.8 and angle of view 94.5°. It has Macro focusing capability with a minimum focusing distance of just 7.9", for a reproduction ratio of 1:4. The 9-bladed iris diaphragm obtains beautiful out of focus image characteristics. Aspherical lens elements in the front & rear lens groups minimize distortion, spherical aberration and astigmatisms. The lens has non-vignetting optical construction in order to obtain adequate peripheral brightness with wide apertures-especially desirable for digital cameras. The lens incorporates a rear focus system eliminating front lens rotation. The focusing ring does not rotate during autofocus yet provides adequate focusing torque of the focusing ring during manual focusing of the lens. The lens materials used in this new lens are lead and arsenic free ecological glass.

    Sigma 20mm f/1.8 Reviews

Super W/A 20mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF RF AF Lens is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 48.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from SUPER WIDE...MINIMAL IMAGE DISTORTION I use this lens on my 5D Mark II. This is my second Sigma lens purchase after the impressive 50mm f/1.4. I was considering the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 II as my super wide option. However, the f/1.8 and price point of this lens trumped the zoom of Canon. You can use this lens at a BRIGHT 82mm f/1.8! Minimal image distortion makes this my super wide lens; while I consider my 14mm f/2.8 a creative lens. Auto focus speed is fair but consistent. For video, this is a DSLR game PRETTY, so CRISPY, so BRIGHT and W-I-D-E! The 20cm minimal focus distance makes this lens very versatile. It uses the Redrock Micro Follow Focus C gear.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I love this lens!! First off, when I read a product review I tend to ignore the 5 stars AND the single stars. I always feel the honesty is somewhere in the middle. After a few weeks of steady usage, the lens is consistently sharp, works great in low-light without a flash. This is a very solid build and it feels like a quality lens in your hands. I am 'generally' a Canon L fan, but this Sigma has been on my camera since I got it. Also, this is a near perfect video lens for hybrid DSLR. That all said, auto-focus on this lens is on the slow side as well as noisy, but for what I use it for that is not a problem. You owe it to yourself to check this lens out and it is worthy of 4 stars.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Embarrassingly soft for MY intended use I purchased this lens to shoot stars due to its speed and wide angle and ignored most reviews thinking that people were just being picky and over critical, after all, these were just the specs I needed! Alas, I was terribly disappointed by this Sigma lens. Wide open this lens is useless for night shooting as the stars, even in shorter exposures blur and flare in a halo anywhere outside of the very center. This may be a good effect for some portrait shooting but not for MY purpose. Thanks B&H for your stellar return policy, even though I could have avoided this by actually believing some of the former reviews!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice A great lens for the price. I'm using this on a Canon xsi, so I can't vouch for corner sharpness full-frame, but it is great on this camera. At 1.8 it is pretty soft, and lacks contrast - fine if there's no other option, but not great. By 2.8, it is superb - very sharp and contrasty, and I can't tell any difference in quality from 2.8 through F8. Build quality is nice. The lens is big, and the auto/manual focus slide is a bit odd, but not an issue for me. Focusing is a bit noisy and a bit slow, but it doesn't seem to hunt excessively. Altogether, a good alternative to Canon's 2.8.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best 20mm for your canon I tried out 4 different lenses at B&H in New York in the range of 20-28 mm. This one has the most bang for it's buck. On the downside, it adds a lot of weight to your Camera, but this is due to the quality of the build and glass inside. It has incredible sharpness, a perfect cylindrical bokeh, very beneficial aperture range(up to 1.8) and it allows you to get as close to your subject as you would like. For those with cropped sensors like myself. It gives you a wonderful true 40 mm equivalent focal length. However. It does have a quick adjust for AF and MF that is not totally compatible with the canon, or atleast my 60D. It's not a downfall for the lens, but it would be cool if it worked well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My favorite prime This lens is the one most often on my camera (Canon 20D)aside from my mid-range zoom. The focal length is nice andwide, and f/1.8 means that I can shoot flash-free in anylight that I can actually see in. Focus distance is tiny, Ican get right up in someone's face and take close-upwide-angle shots (always good for a laugh), and focus speedis decent (not USM speed, but pretty fast).Image quality is quite good as well. Expertise: Semi-pro Problems Encountered: The only gripe I have with this lens is the manual-focusring. In order to switch from AF to MF, you have to flip aswitch and also slide the focus ring. I find that the focusring slides way too easily, often when you don't want it to. The lens hood for this lens is fairly useless and just takesup a ton of space.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Coffee Grinder... Awesome! When I got my first copy I was disappointed by the fact the lens front focused. I sent it back and received a new one that still front focuses but only slightly. Despite this flaw, this lens is simply amazing. The minimal focal distance makes this useful for capturing detail shots of food, items, and what not. It's one of my favorite lenses and rarely makes it off the 5D anymore. Be warned though that the focusing mechanism is loud (sounds like a coffee grinder) but isn't too slow at autofocusing (would be nice if this lens had HSM).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Video Lens, So so photo lens Great lens for video ... excellent value for F/1.8 and especially nice for use on Steadicam. Strong vignetting on wide open F-stops on full-frame camera, but this works well for video. Almost flawless performance on APS-C sensor (canon 7D, 50D, T2i etc.) Hyper-focal Distance can be quite far off at low wide apertures, but a little focusing will give you great DOF if you know the range in which you'll be shooting.
