Ilford 1173875 overview

  • 1Description

ILFORD MICROPHEN is a fine grain developer recommended for obtaining the maximum film speed with films that can be push processed. It is optimized for use at the faster end of the exposure range. Grain size is reduced and grain clumping is prevented because of the low alkalinity of the developer.

The majority of developers which give an increase in film speed usually produce a corresponding increase in grain size. MICROPHEN, however, has been specially formulated to overcome this disadvantage, and therefore has a high speed to grain ratio. That is, there is a speed increase while giving the type of grain associated with a standard developer. A speed increase can be achieved with many films and meter settings up to EI 3200/36 can be used with ILFORD HP5 Plus film.

MICROPHEN is supplied as a powder and shows exceptional consistency in performance throughout its working life. It is made up to a stock solution for normal tank and tray use, and can be further diluted 1+1 or 1+3 for users who prefer to use fresh solution each time.

Microphen Developer (Powder) for Black & White Film is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from the one and only I have been using this product ever since I had a home darkroom 25 years ago. There is just no other product on the market (speed increasing fine grain developer) that is so easy to use. You could use Acufine or UFG I suppose but those are high maintenance and hard to dissolve. Ilford Microphen, you just mix, use, and dump. Easy and the results are beautiful. Gives fine grain, smooth results with just about any film with more than box speed. I prefer it to the ID-11/D76 developers even though Microphen is supposed to give the same results. IMO this gives smoother and finer grain. Acutance might be less but I can't see the difference. Also great for push processing. I wish this was available in larger packs as it gets pricey if you have a lot of film to develop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EXCELLENT product Microphen had been my choice for my undergrad photo classes 14 years ago and it is STILL my choice. I use it for processing pushed Ilford HP5+ negs. I love the grains produced by the resulting images. Grains that, in my experience, unless the enlargements are 11 x 14 or bigger, are negligible. I recently just finished my thesis exhibition for my MFA and 98 percent of the images included in it were film based. Negatives that were processed with -- you guessed it -- Ilford's Microphen. I vouch by this product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best developer out there. Yes, I would recommend this to a friend I've used so any different developers over the years, and this might be my favorite yet. It was pretty easy to mix - just slightly more complicated than say, D76 (it has two packages of powder). As for results? I used it just last night to develop a roll of Ilford HP5+ shot at 6400. I've used TMax developer before to develop it at 3200 and 1600, but never 6400 (as at 3200, it already has too much grain). The difference here is stark... My negatives all had a lot of tone left to them - not over-contrasty like with other developers when pushing. And better than that, they didn't have a ton of clumpy grain all over the place. I would recommend this to anybody that is interested in pushing film or using high-speed B&W film (such as Delta 3200). You won't get better results than with this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Glad Ilford still makes it... I use Microphen to push Ilford Delta 3200 to the limits (6400 and up) as I need it for my night time street photography. It is working well (I always use manual settings and measure exposure for the mid-tones; I also overexpose one stop); I tried Kodak Tmax developer and Ilford ID11 and and like Microphen more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for pushing Used this developer to push Ilford HP5 Plus to ISO 1600. Worked consistently across 4 rolls of film. Produces fine grain and retains detail in shadows and highlights. Much better for pushing than D-76 in my experience. Simple to mix also.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great pushing developer! I use this developer to process Delta 3200. Even at 6400, grain is surprisingly small and shadow detail remains good relative to most push processing results. The characteristics of this developer can't be found in any Kodak alternative, so if you want some of the finest looking results in push processing, try this stuff with a high speed film or a 400 speed film at 1600.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Microphen delivers! I used Microphen to develop 3 rolls of Ilford Delta 3200 shot at ISO 3200. I expected grainy results, but instead had excellent images with nice tonal range, and relatively low grain. Though Microphen is a tad more expensive than other developers, I would definitely use it again in similar circumstances. All in all, it delivers the goods as promised. I'd give it a higher rating except for the cost and requirement to use it undiluted.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome! I used this to push Tri-x to 1600 and 3200. The grain was very subtle and the mid tones were great
