Heliopan 40.5mm Linear Polarizer Filter
Key Features
  • Minimize Reflections and Glare
  • Reduces Haze and Blue Cast in Landscapes
  • Enhances Color and Tonal Saturation
  • 40.5mm Front Filter Threads
The Heliopan 40.5mm Linear Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. This results in a noticeable increase in the saturation of skies and foliage, as well as clearer imagery when photographing in hazy conditions. A linear polarizer differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not supports use of a camera's autofocus or auto exposure functions; it is best suited for use with manual cameras, such as view cameras, that are not dependent on internal mechanisms to determine focus or metering settings.

Heliopan Linear Polarizer Overview

The Heliopan 40.5mm Linear Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. This results in a noticeable increase in the saturation of skies and foliage, as well as clearer imagery when photographing in hazy conditions. The front and rear surfaces of the filter both feature a single anti-reflection coating. Each coating helps to increase light transmission by reducing reflections, scattered light, and ghosting. Additionally, they offer protection to the filter substrate while helping to keep the glass clean for longer than uncoated glass.

This Heliopan filter is constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. It features a brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

Reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Arrange and filter directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Lessens haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° from the sun.
Single coatings on both the front and rear offer protection to the glass and help to improve light transmission and image quality.
Constructed from Schott glass for optical clarity.
Brass filter ring helps to prevent jamming and provides additional strength.
Dual threading with 40.5mm front filter threads permits combining with other filters.

39 and 48 mm polarizers

The Heliopan 39mm and 48 mm polarizers were purchased for my M9 systems' 50mm and 90mm, no sensor, lenses since this is a manual focus Leica camera. The single most usable feature is the included number guide (1-10) to help set the desired polarization needed. They are installed over my UV filters and I leave them on all the time since I live in Fla. and have harsh lighting conditions most of the time; saves me from searching for them when needed.

This is a linear polarizer. It is cheaper than circular polarizers, and it was bought as an experiment, to determine whether I can get away without a circular polarizer, using a mirrorless camera(Olympus EM-1).It works very well, both optically and mechanically. The threading fits precisely, easy to take off. The turning mechanism is not loose and not too tight.

Well made

Like all Heliopan products I've seen, this is bulletproof in its construction. It works like it should and looks to be doing so for many years

Good buy, works great. Have used it a few times recently and have decided to leave it on my lens.

With a mirrorless Micro-4/3rds camera, do you need to use a circular polarizer? Or will a linear one be effective?
Asked by: Kurt
Circular polarizer filters are recommended for use if you will be using autofocus to focus your lens, as linearly-polarized light can confuse autofocus sensors and cause autofocus errors. However, if you will be focusing your lens manually, you may use a linear polarizing filter.

Thickness? Need 30.5 mm polarizer that will fit in filter drawer of 600 mm catadioptric. Filter needs to be 7 mm thick.
Asked by: Allan
I purchased one through Amazon, turned out to be the same thing, Heliopan #730539. Fits the 30.5mm thread in the filter tray ok, but the thickness is 8 mm, so doesn't work. It is 6 mm from outer edge of one knurled ring to the outer edge of the other. This is the rotating part. The mounting threads are 2 mm deep, so overall width is 8 mm.

I have a Nikon Coolpix L340. I am aware that it's lens is 35mm. Is this polarizer applicable to that particular camera?
Asked by: scott
The Nikon COOLPIX L340 digital camera does not have filter threads on the lens. So you cannot use any filters on this camera.
