Battery Charger

As with all Anton Bauer chargers, charging with the Tandem-70 is fully automatic. Mount any Logic Series battery to the Tandem-70 and it will automatically determine the appropriate charge routine and execute it.
The Tandem-70 will charge any Anton Bauer Logic Series Gold Mount battery including:
  • ProPac 14
  • Digital ProPac 14
  • TrimPac 14
  • Digital Trimpac
  • Hytron 50/100/140
  • Dionic 90/160
  • InterActive

The Tandem-70 incorporates the exclusive InterActive communication between the battery and charger, which allows the charger to identify any Anton Bauer battery attached and determine the precise charge routine for that particular battery under its present condition.

    Three Stage Charging

In general, the Tandem-70 utilizes a Three-Stage Charge Routine for each battery.

    DC Power Supply

The Tandem-70 will automatically operate as an AC adapter once the camera or other device is switched on. An On/Off switch is not incorporated into the power supply (a green LED will light, indicating that the unit is operating as a power supply).

    Automatic Source Selection

If the AC line voltage is removed, and a charged battery is mounted on the Tandem-70, power from the battery will be routed to the camera. When the AC line voltage is restored, the battery is reevaluated for a proper charge routine.

If you hope this will power your FS7, it won’t. Some day Sony and Anton Bauer maybe on the same page. It will charge the newer digital 90 batteries, not bad for $600

    Great Idea, Questionable Durability

The Good: We usually keep the Tandem chargers on our JVC GY-HM700 ENG cameras full-time. Coupled with an A/B Dionic 90 battery, that's less than 3 pounds on the back of the camera, which balances just fine. And since the unit is always there, it just takes a few seconds to plug into a nearby a/c outlet when shooting sit-down interviews, news conferences, live shots, etc. As a power supply, the unit easily powers the camera and a 25-watt camera light. Why use the battery if you don't have to? The Tandem 70 lacks a digital readout, but the charging speed/performance seems on-par with our more expensive A/B Interactive Dual/Quad base chargers. The bad: We own six Tandem 70's, all purchased in 2010. In the last year, two of them have failed (one twice) and required shipping back to Anton/Bauer for warranty repairs. That's not a good track record, especially since all of them will be out of warranty this year. They are also very expensive for what they are. Bottom Line: I recommend these units, primarily because it allows your camera to be plugged in anywhere...all you need is a power cord. But the high failure rate of our Tandems is a concern.

    Rough start, but...

Just purchased the JVC GY-HM750 and after researching the options I decided to go with the recommended Anton Bauer system giving me both a battery charger and AC adapter for the camera. When performing the first charge it took a few trys to get the battery to start charging properly, and I was initially concerned the way the battery was so tight when removing it from the charger. It felt like at first it had gotten jammed and that I was forcing to get it off. After successfully getting the battery to start charging the first time, and realizing it does lock on tightly, I have had no problems, and am pleased with the performance for both charging, and the simplicity of its use for plugging the camera in. It also balances the camera out very nicely.

    May not be fixable

This seems like a great device and the first one I had worked well for about a year. It was nice to be able to plug in the things running on D-tap and it was also nice to be able to charge the battery while it was mounted on the rig. However, one day, it didn't work and on close inspection, I noticed a slight electric circuit smell like something had burned out. So, I called Anton Bauer and was told that they had recently updated the circuitry and that even though mine was only about a year old, it could not be repaired. They said to dispose of it and buy a new one. I asked if they had any kind of replacement program so I could maybe get one at cost and they said no. So, $ down the drain. Who knows if these will be able to be repaired in a year?
