Cameras or accessories that are compatible with a 1/4"-20 or 3/16"-20 mount can be connected to the 410PL Quick Release Plate, which measures 2.5 x 3.3 x 0.5" and has a rubberized, non-slip surface. Manfrotto 405 Geared Head Reviews

Great for product photography

We have about 6 of these in our studio. I really wouldn't want any other product as the micro adjust is a game changer for small adjustments. We have sent 4/6 of them back due to various issues. The gearing was very stiff on a few, broke on others and the foam & rubber has come off. Manfrotto has no warranty for the foam or rubber coming loose. We have tried a few adhesives with no success. I am guessing it will have to be cemented on. Only purchased two through B&H, customer service is great with B&H. Make sure you sign up for your warranty with all manfrotto. It is not automatic.

The price went up, but the quality is declining.

This is the 5th or 6th time I've bought this geared head. Call me a slow learner. In my defense, there are some good things about the 405 geared head. Its range of motion on the tilt beats a lot of other more expensive geared heads. And, even at the new higher cost, it's WAY less expensive than some of the others. However, they don't last. This time the pan control quit working properly, and there is 'slop' now in the pan function. It lasted lasted four months, which is a new low in my experience with this product.

This is the tripod head I wished I had purchased way back when, before I understood the pros and cons of the different tripod head styles. It is MUCH faster and way more PRECISE than the Manfrotto pan & tilt head I started with. It is also more precise and has a firmer hold than my Really RIght Stuff ball head. The disadvantages are the cost and the weight. It isn't cheap but it is high quality and very useful for the precise positioning you want for product or macro photography. It is heavier than you would want for schlepping out and about but it is made to hold a LOT of camera gear. I have teemed this head to the Manfrotto MT057C4-G tripod for use in my studio and the fine positioning of the head and geared column are perfect for my product photography needs.

It's a great head when it works, but after a while it will get worn out. I am on my third in about 5.5 years. The first one only lasted a year and the second lasted about 4.5 years. To be fair, I was pretty hard on my first one and dropped it taking it out of my car. I shoot real estate daily so I am using it a lot and this still may be the best geared head for the money, but the price keeps going up! It used to be nearly $300 cheaper! This may be my last one if something else of similar quality comes along by the time this one wears out.

Love it, but don't get attac...

I love this tripod head, but as other review have stated...it does not last...this is my second one and it has only lasted 1 year...and now the price is way higher...not sure what I will replace it with but I'd you do buy this I would get the extended warranty if possible.

question

I need a padded bag for this very expensive head. Can you recommend one?
Asked by: Anonymous
I would suggest this holster case by Ruggard for the Manfrotto 405 Pro Digital Geared Head - http://bhpho.to/1kcZri6. Additionally, the Adventura 140 shoulder bag by Lowepro will provide adequate padding for this tripod head: http://bhpho.to/1eqmsvt

question

I already have multiple lenses, a camera body and other accessories that use Arca-Swiss style plates. Manfrotto uses proprietary QR plates. Requesting a recommendation on specific adapters or other ideas to be able to continue using my current plate set up with this head.
Asked by: Anonymous
The 405 Pro Digital Geared Head uses the Manfrotto RC4 quick release system. In order to use Arca-Swiss plates with this head, you could look at the Kirk Quick Release Clamp for Arca-Type Plates (B&H # KISQRC3271 Mfr # SQRC-3271). This would allow you to use Arca-type plates on a head with the RC4 quick release system.

question

Can I use this head on the Induro Carbon 8X CT214 Tripod leg system?
Asked by: Jennifer G.
Jennifer G, this head will definitely fit on your tripod but bear in mind that even though it may look small in the photos, its a large head and heavier than your tripod itself at 1.6kg vs 1.5kg for the Induro. Functionality wise, I love this head for the ability to adjust accurately with the gear action. I use it on a studio stand but would have no problem using it on my Manfrotto 475 tripod. If weight and physical size is going to be an issue for you (just assuming as you bought a carbon tripod) then there is the Manfrotto 410 Junior which is much more compact. I have bigger hands and find the quick release part of the adjusters a bit fiddly but the gearing for the micro adjustments seems really good, probably finer adjustment than the 405 head. It would be best if you could see and touch these heads in the flesh as photos can be quite deceiving. Personally. I'm happy to trade higher weight for stability and adjustment but you need to make that call. Good luck...Saul

question

Does this work well with the Manfrotto MT190CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber Tripod, considering the head weighs almost as much as the legs?
Asked by: Anonymous
One of the advantages of Carbon Fiber is for less weight you get similar if not equal load capacity. For example if you compare the MT190CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber Tripod to its similar aluminum version B&H # MA190XPRO4, they both have a maximum height of 63, can support 15.4 lbs 7.0 kg yet the CF version is lighter 3.6 lb (1.6 kg) vs 4.6 lb (2.1 kg). The MT190CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber Tripod can use the 405 Geared Head without issue.

Can this head be used on a Cambo U-29 Panning Camera Platform?

I don't see why not. As long as you have a 3/8 thread it should work fine.

question

Hi All,I need the dimensions of the 405 gear head as I'm designing a fixture for one of my application in engineering. So can anyone let me know where I can get the CAD file of the gear head or atleast the dimensions?Thank you.Regards,Raghav
Asked by: Aravind R.
Raghav,Have you tried the Manfrotto website? The Overall height and length vary with the angles that you set on the head. About the only thing that does not change is the width. If Manfrotto cannot help let me know through this forum and I will measure mine in the standard or extreme setting positions. This is a great head I am using it for macro work with a Stack Shot rail system, novoflex cross rails a Canon 5D III and a 180mm f3.5 Canon macro lens and it handles all this weight easily and smoothly.Regards,Frank
