Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Overview

As simple as it is versatile, the AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D from Nikon is a compact normal-length prime lens. Its bright f/1.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in a variety of lighting conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field for isolating focus. A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements, and reduces lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy when working in bright and backlit conditions. Also, a rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Normal-length prime lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture offers depth of field control for working with selective focus techniques.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Autofocus system is compatible with select Nikon DSLRs that support D-type lenses, and offers quick and precise focusing performance.

Autofocus is not supported by DSLRs lacking an autofocus motor, such as the D3000-series, D5000-series, D40, D40X, and D60, where the lens may be used with manual focus only.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Reviews

Truly Amazing

I am so in love with this lens. The price is perfect. The size and weight is perfect. I have always wanted a small enough lens to just use everywhere and this is the right one. What I love about this lens is that it's not a wide angle or tele. Just the right amount for what I do. I highly recommend it.

It's hard to believe that this D series can still compare to all the newer 50mm lenses. But it when it comes to image quality, this lens is almost unbeatable! The rendition is absolutely amazing! The center sharpness wide open is medium format level amazing; it has that special indescribable quality. Great rendition as it's stopped down as well! As a landscape photographer, I don't mind the screw drive. But it has been surprisingly quick for the little portraiture that I have used the lens for as well. Durable too! My copy has seen years of rain, sand, waterfalls, and ocean spray- still going strong!

The Versatile Lens

I bought this lens for my D3200 Nikon. I was aware that it would not be the equivalent of a true 50mm lends on my camera but would be an effective 75mm lens due to the smaller sensor in my camera. However, that is just wat I wanted. I wanted a portrait lens for my grandchildren and the bokeh is terrific. This is a manual focus lens with my camera and due to my slightly deteriorated eyesight, I would have appreciated the old prism / match top and bottom focus that I had on my old Minolta film cameras. However, I am finding that the focus is still pretty sharp, even at larger apertures. I was given good, solid guidance by the B&H staff before I bought this and a I thank them for this. I am fully satisfied. WPK

Time for a prime

I purchased this for my wife to add to her kit which was two "starter" zooms that came with her d3500 body. There is nothing like a prime. This is a tiny light weight lens that is super sharp and super fast. The fact that her body isn't a full frame the lens becomes a 75 1:8 perfect for portrait work without a flash. The images are excellent and I'm sure it will be her go to very soon.

Good creative lens for the price

I bought this as a prime lens for my Nikon D3200, which means I have to focus by hand and use the aperture priority setting. But, being a photography old timer, I love it. It gives me more creative control over my photos. It's a good way to practice photography skills that have fallen by the wayside in the auto age. And it's well made and looks good attached to a DSLR. The uninitiated might think you have a film camera. I highly recommend this lens.

Nifty Nifty Fifty

The Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens just got a workout on a San Diego nature trail. The sharpness was excellent - it noticed a distant power line that I did not. A handheld photo merge worked as well. And doing composition without a zoom was a challenge I liked.

Tack sharp, fast focus, nice $

The lens is the last of its kind with a functional aperture ring. I use it on a Nikon Df so it suits the camera well. It's super sharp, focus is fast, and it's a lot of lens for the price. It's a tad noisy, but I'm used to higher priced lenses and their quiet motors. Still, I highly recommend this nifty fifty. It's a great lens.
