Nikon 50mm f/1.8 overview

  • 1Description

As simple as it is versatile, the AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D from Nikon is a compact normal-length prime lens. Its bright f/1.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in a variety of lighting conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field for isolating focus. A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements, and reduces lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy when working in bright and backlit conditions. Also, a rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Normal-length prime lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture offers depth of field control for working with selective focus techniques.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Autofocus system is compatible with select Nikon DSLRs that support D-type lenses, and offers quick and precise focusing performance.

Autofocus is not supported by DSLRs lacking an autofocus motor, such as the D3000-series, D5000-series, D40, D40X, and D60, where the lens may be used with manual focus only.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

    Nikon 50mm f/1.8 reviews

AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 2128.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from You're dumb if you don't buy this lens EVERYONE SHOULD OWN THIS PRIME. Don't waste another $200 on the 1.4. I don't care what anyone says, in a print you will never know the extra 1/4 of a stop difference, and the performance of this lens at $ is amazing. Not only will you never want to shoot with your zoom again, you may even want to run over it with your car. Primes are where's it at if you can swing it. Granted when shooting weddings I have my 18-200VR on a body, but that is for sheer convienece and insurance that I don't miss anything while swapping out my primes. Buy more camera bodies and forget the zooms (unless it's the 70-200VR). ;)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes me a better photographer! I'm a newbie and had read great things about the nifty fifty lens. I was hesitant to buy this lens for my D40 because I would have to manually focus the camera, but because it cost much less than the AF-S 1.8 lens decided to give it a shot. I received the lens shortly before a family reunion. I love the size and how light and compact my camera feels with this lens mounted. The pictures taken with this lens are brighter and clearer than the ones I took with either the kit lens or the 55-200 zoom lens. Focusing was much easier than expected. This lens is helping me learn more about photography than any book or web post I've read so far. I can't really think of anything I don't like about it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nikon 50mm f1.8 So I am newer to the camera game but I have a Nikon D5200 body that came with the kit 18-55mm lens. This lens is ok but I knew I needed something a little better, so I went ahead and purchased this 50mm f1.8 Nikon lens. It has been working great for me. I love the blown out background I can get with this lens. This model is the manual focus one but that is ok for me. I wanted to get better at manual focus anyway and this kinda forces me to. Great little lens and I would definitely recommend it to anyone that is looking foe a prime lens and seemed to me to be pretty budget friendly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Talk about a Nifty Fifty! I find it amazing that one of the sharpest lenses Nikon offers is also it's cheapest, but there you have it. On my APS-C sensor it offers a view equivalent to 75mm, and with an f/1.8 aperture, it makes a great portrait lens. I considered the f/1.8G, but my D7000 has an internal focusing motor, and I'd rather pay half the price! I really see no reason NOT to own this lens, and many reasons to pick it up ASAP: fast max aperture (great for low light), beautiful bokeh, works on FX and DX sensors, lightweight but with a decent feeling build, outstanding price... I can't think of anything I'd change!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great prime lens I recently bought the 50 1.8 Nikon on a XV-anera job I had in Fort Wort a week back and I love it ! This is the first prime lens that I have ever had and it honestly makes Me consider buying more. It's extremely fast and with a high ISO you dont need a flash. I shot a lot of outdoor portraits the days I was there and did not have a hard time adjusting to it. Buying this lens makes Me have an easier time deciding whether to buy a zoom lens or the 85 1.8 Nikon. Expertise: 2 years in photography Problems Encountered: None but I wish it had a hood Previous Equivalent Item Owned: First prime lens Items I Recommend: HOYA UV filter

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A True Classic I had recently purchased a Nikon D700 and was looking for a new lens to take advantage of the bigger FX sensor. Since it is so inexpensive (compared to fancier zooms) I figured what the heck, if I don't like it I won't lose that much. What a pleasant surprise this lens turned out to be! This lens is my absolute favorite, as it has fantastic performance in low-light, focuses very fast and is razor sharp. The shallow depth-of-field makes it superb for people photos, as the backgrounds are nicely blurred away. Its speed allows me to leave my SB-800 flash at home--even at night. This lens has made photography fun again; I feel I had gotten lazy with all my other zooms. Now I only think about creativity and composition, and not so much about the technical side of things because I know this lens can handle just about anything! An absolute pleasure to shoot with.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Ok for the price, but soft below f4 I bought this lens when I bought my D600. The kit lens that came with my D600 is sharper than this lens is. I shoot fashion, beauty and portraits and when I use this lens I usually shoot at 1.8-2.8. Unfortunately, it's not sharp when opened up that wide. I'll be getting the 1.8G to replace this thrifty fifty. Although this lens is inexpensive, my advice would be to use the $$ that you'd spend on this lens and put it towards buying the 1.8G version instead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why don't you already have it? Nothing here but a really great, fast, and inexpensive piece of glass you should absolutely have in your bag, if you don't have one you are missing out big time. I love use this lens for portraits, but it performs for really anything including beautiful landscapes, exaggerated long exposures, inside, outside, night, you name it. I bought this lens to adapt for video, which it is great for, but I got even more mileage out of it when I took it on vacation with my D80. If you wanted to shell out the cash you could upgrade to the f/1.4 but for the price of this one there is no excuse not to have a fast 50mm on your camera.
