Smith-Victor 701955 reviews

Shoe Mount For Flash/Video Lights is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 49.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from ok but needs work I picked up 3 of these and on each one I had to file down the hole drilled out for the tension screw on the side. That part isn't all bad, my main problem is I have to put tape on the bottom where the flash goes. If I don't it shorts out my 580EX and 430EX II. Seems the groove at the bottom should be a little deeper. With some tape or paper though I don't have a problem so at least its a quick fix.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best so far Picked up 4 of these to mount hot shoe flashes to (580ex ii) and they work like a charm. We have some from photoflex that came with our light stands, but the construction, although only slightly different, makes for a completely different product. Whereas the photoflex cold shoes are very loose, which causes the pins to touch down on the mount occasionally, causing a misfire, these mounts by Smith-Victor are the perfect size leaving no ream for the pins to touch the bottom of the mount. The three speedlight rig that I developed has the flashes mounted in a horizontal position, yet with everything tightened down properly we've had no issues with flashes slipping from their cold shoes. I'll be purchasing more of these and throwing out the photoflex adapters.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Better Options Available I bought one of these for use with a Nikon SB-700. It does the trick, but always seemed less than secure. The design relies on a small thumb screw to hold the full weight of the flash. I ended up buying the Stroboframe General Purpose Shoe Mount (#300-405), which provides a much more secure grip along the full edge of the mount.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Didn't work for me I bought this to hold my SB-700 flash and the screw that holds it in was on the wrong side (the thin side instead of the thick side like in the product photo). To insert the flash you have to unscrew it almost all the way and many times the screw would fall out. Once my flash fell off the mount on to the floor but luckily it hit the carpet and didn't break. I returned this inferior product and ordered the Frio plastic mount (B&H # FRENLFRC1A) which is a much better unit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job just be careful It holds my Sb800 and LP160 flashes just fine. The only issue I notice is the screw that locks the flash in. You have to have it almost all the way out before the flash will slide all the way in. I have dropped the screw so many times and had to spend time searching for it. I wish they'd include another one or something to keep it so the screw would stay with the shoe mount when you try to slide a flash in. That's my only complaint.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Does not fit SB900 I purchased this adapter/shoe mount based on a review which indicates it fits the SB900. In fact it does NOT. Not even close!!! Either the previous reviewer and I have very different SB900's (which is unlikely), or the reviewer did not mean Nikon SB900. I spent over an hour filing and carefully modifying & cleaning the part so it would fit. I did not check if it fits SB800. I therefore caution other potential consumers. Jim

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Accessory for Tinkerers I have a few of these shoes that I use to custom mount flashes and sensors; they work great for that. There is no spring metal on the base or a stop in the front however, so the only thing that keeps stuff from sliding out of the shoe is the screw on the side. It works fine, but is slightly annoying if you take stuff on and off of the shoes frequently since you have to loosen and tighten the side screw each time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cheap but works okay The price is great, and it's small and lightweight - ideal as a spare to have along. Add electrical tape in the trough to insulate the flash hot pins. The adapter works well enough for rare use. But if you plan to use it frequently with a Canon flash, there is a much better alternative. See Crane Strobe Locking Shoe f/Canon, CRSLSC. Price is 3X, but it's far easier to use and more secure.
