Smith-Victor 45BS overview

  • 1Description

This is a Smith-Victor 45" 45BS 45" Black/Silver Umbrella.

Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a lightbox.

Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.

Smith-Victor 45BS reviews

45BS 45" Black/Silver Umbrella is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Has added advantage of not shining light in audience's eyes! Until now I've had white umbrellas, but they have a slight disadvantage. (I'm talking about continuous lighting for video). When you shine them on a speaker (at a podium; speaking to an audience), you will always have light shining at the audience, no matter which way the umbrellas are positioned (whether the light is reflecting off or shining through). So this causes light to shine in the audience's eyes, and makes it a little harder for them to see the speaker. The most ideal thing would be for the back of the umbrella to be black, and the light reflects off the inside of the umbrella, shiningonly on the speaker, and not on the audience. Thus, when you put the umbrellas on the side of the room, or even in middle, it will not be a problem. p.s. As a matter of fact, it seems that the black-backed ones have an additional advantage that they are more reflective; so even more light (and perhaps better contrast), is reflected on the subject. Thus, you may want to buy black-backed umbrellas right away, unless there is some photographic advantage of white (or perhaps if you specifically want the light to shine in both directions, and give the whole area light).
