It would be more than strong enough to support the weight of a flash, umbrella, and umbrella bracket. However, for safety purposes (especially for use outdoors), I would also recommend using a sandbag on the base of the light stand as extra ballast (such as the Impact Filled Saddle Sandbag (15 lb, Black), B&H # IMSBFB15).

Yes, there is a standard 1/4" thread screw on top, so any adapter will work. Keep in mind this is meant to hold lighting, however, so I recommend you look at camera tripods instead, which will probably be more stable and be more apt for holding an iPad or smart phone.

My Genaray LED lights screwed on perfectly. In fact I believe I bought this as part of a kit from B&H, which included this stand with those lights. You may want to call B&H to ask their experts to confirm. Otherwise my guess is that it will work fine.
