Behringer MDX2600 overview

  • 1Description

The COMPOSER PRO-XL MDX2600 from Behringer is an interactive, reference-class two-channel expander/gate/compressor/peak limiter with integrated dynamic enhancer, de-esser and low contour filter, housed in a single space rack-mount chassis.

The unit is similar to the AUTOCOM PRO-XL MDX1600, but in addition provides tube emulation and more compressor control.

Applicable to recording, mixing or mastering, the unit provides total dynamic control. Additionally it features a unique adjustable IDE dynamic enhancer that provides subtle and very musical compensation for the bass "boost" effect that can result from heavy compression.

Switchable program adaptive compression circuitry combines the advantages of both hard and soft knee characteristics
Adjustable dynamic enhancer with level meter for boosting high frequencies under heavy compression
Interactive gain control peak limiting circuitry combines clipper and program limiter for reliable and inaudible protection against signal peaks
Switchable de-esser with switchable male/female voice recognition, removes excess sibilance from vocal tracks
Interactive ratio control expander/gate circuitry for virtually inaudible noise suppression
Automatic or manual adjustable attack and release times
Switchable low contour filter prevents "pumping" due to low-frequency dominated compression
Switchable tube simulation for the extra "warmth" and transparency of classic tube circuitry
Stereo coupling function with independent output level settings
Switchable side-chain input with side-chain monitor function
Separate 12-segment LED meters for input/output levels and gain reduction
High quality detented ALPS potentiometers and illuminated switches
Relay-controlled hard bypass switch with auto bypass function in the case of power failure
Servo balanced inputs and outputs with gold-plated XLR and 1/4" TRS connectors

    Behringer MDX2600 reviews

    MDX2600 COMPOSER PRO-XL Compressor is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another winner from Behringer I've been using this unit for about a week now and love it. The compression and gating features on this unit work as well as any I've used. This unit is also packed with a lot of other nice features like the Male/Female button on the De-Esser for reducing sibilance. It will take a few more shows in different venues to decide if I like the Tube Emulator, but all of the other features work as described by Behringer. The MDX2600 removes the noise and limits the peak signal, which is great for a clean and controlled sound. In addition, we use all powered speakers so the added layer of protection is a real benefit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value and excellent results I use this for small studio use, mainly with a single condenser microphone for vocal recordings. There is a lot of features in this compressor/expander and the gate provides an excellent way to create a silent noise floor. It is very sensitive and repeatable in setting. Also the AUTO setting works well for just getting started. It would be nice to have a bit more guidance in the user manual as the unit is very versatile and better examples of use would be very helpful. This is an excellent value for the cost conscious podcaster or small studio user. The LED VU meters are excellent and seem to be well calibrated. Another great feature is a -4 and -10 db input selection on the back. allows use with a wide range of input levels. Noise floor is excellent and headroom seems very good for a unit of this price. I like that it uses power cord direct, no wall wart style power supply.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you're recording, you need one! I've used two-channel compressors before, but the Composer Pro-XL is perfect for our current needs. Not only does the compressor do its job and sound great, but the added elements of the gate and de-esser turn out to perfectly fit our changing recording environments. This is a great value for anyone doing any recording.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Compressor! Highly recommend I plan to use this for podcasting and for when I record myself playing drums. My experience so far--- has been great. This compressor is built very well and does exactly what you want it to do. (It also throws in some cool extra features like the DE-ESSER). The only down side is the manual. It isn't written very well.. so if your trying to learn the basics, check out youtube. There are some good videos on how to work this there. Other wise it's a great value and works great for what I want to do.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Behringer Compressor PRO-XL MDX2600 Dissatisfied in a word is what I am after using this compressor. First, it has a noticeable hum. The main reason I got it was to eliminate hums (and other room noise), not create them. Secondly, compared to the benefits of using compression and/or limiter via software (both Garage Band and Adobe Audition) there was not enough benefits to warrant the purchase price. Additionally, using the microphone thru the Behringer BEFORE connecting to the recording software resulted in NO improvement or interesting difference in sound. Finally, the unit got a little hot to the touch (not to the point of danger). My computer software far outweighed the performance of the Behringer. Perhaps in a live performance situation, it might be beneficial, but not for digital/iMac recording.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great! Great compressor, I have been using this model in live sound for 6 years now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good performance, but missing features Understand that this application is very specific. A very live -- make that *extremely* live auditorium which was designed for excellent non-sound-reinforced acapella singing, but of course is also used in a lecture setting. The downside is that intelligibility of amplified spoken word is really a challenge in the room. I used a manual I found for a Behringer 2200 to make the purchasing decision. This 2600 is missing the ratio control for the gate/expander -- it's automatic. I have no idea what the algorithm is and the manual does not describe it. Them manual is woefully lacking in setup details and technical descriptions of settings. If one does not currently operate a compressor and purchases this one, he will need to scour the internet for info to understand compressor operation. The manual contains only minimal graphics and is downright bare of typical applications. The writer of the manual should be embarassed at the lack of detail. The previous model 2200 manual was somewhat better. In the end, the compressor works. We primarily operate in the low dB levels in this extremely live room application, so the I/O meters are almost useless -- the minimum on the meter is -30dB. Be sure to check the *pair* of input level switches on the rear -- ours came with one set at high, and the other at low.
