Yamaha NS-C444 overview

  • 1Description

The center channel is the most important part of a movie soundtrack, reproducing the actor's voices and all of the other sounds associated with the on-screen action. Typically placed above, atop, or just below the television, the center channel speaker reproduces 75%+ of the on-screen action in a Dolby Digital soundtrack. It is, therefore, important that it have a wide frequency response and high power handling capacity. For optimum performance, this speaker should also be voice-matched to the other speakers in your home theater, creating a seamless soundstage as action moves from left to center to right (and back) during playback of the selection.

The NS-C444 has dual 5" Polymer Injected Mica Diaphragm (PMD)woofers and a 1" Aluminium Dome Tweeter, capable of handling a whopping 100 to 250 watts.

Waveguide Horn
Unlike most homes, movie theaters use sound absorbing materials on walls and ceilings. The result is that the sound reaching your ears is the sound wave produced by the speakers rather than reflected off the walls. Yamaha has created wave guides that greatly reduce reflected sound and increase the proportion of directly generated sound waves reaching your ears. The result is a clear and precise sense of sound direction and placement.
Magnetic Shielding
The speaker is magnetically shielded, so it can be placed on a TV or video monitor without degrading the picture via stray magnetic fields.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good center channel, for the price, hard to beat. It's a very nice center channel for smaller rooms that are not treated with sound deadeners. Not a a wow speaker, but it really does a great job with dialog, which is what it should do. It has a bit higher senstivity than some of it's similarly priced competitors, but it also runs at 6 ohms, which most of them don't, so it kinda compensates for that. I'll say this of the whole NS lineup (the current ones that look like these) they're for home theater. They're not super musical. Great for home theater, adequate for music. Which is why i knock off a star, but honestly, music should be listened to in stereo, and i use a separate speaker set for that. For what i use it for, i'm very happy with the money spent on it. Have had a refurbished one for about 3 years now, with 0 issues. Also might be nice if it could go down a little deeper, but i have a sub for that reason also, however my other speakers do get a little bit lower, which means i miss out on that with my current AVR as it only has one crossover point, not individual per channel. I tend to just let this not play that great at 50hz and crossover at 50, where my other speakers start to roll off and don't really notice the fact it's rolling off a little earlier.
