Nikon 12-24mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

The AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED Lens from Nikon is designed for use with Nikon DX format DSLR cameras. It features wide angle zoom capability with a 35mm focal length equivalent of 18-36mm, enabling creatively distorted ultra-wide perspectives and standard wide-angle shooting for capturing interiors, landscape vistas and documentary and photojournalistic style images. Its constant f/4 maximum aperture delivers consistent exposure control throughout the zoom range.

Two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements and three aspherical elements reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, leading to sharp, color-accurate, high contrast images. Super Integrated Coating on the lens elements improves light transmission and reduces flare and ghosting.

This G-type NIKKOR lens is designed with no aperture ring, and offers easier, virtually mistake-free operation. Autofocus is supported by the Silent Wave Motor which provides fast, precise and near-silent operation, particularly useful when shooting video. Manual focus override enables immediate control over manual focus, even in AF mode. Zoom and focus rings are smooth and this compact lens is built to handle inclement weather and tough shooting environments.

Ultra-wide angle zoom lens with constant f/4 maximum aperture provides the 35mm focal length equivalence of a 18-36mm lens
Two Extra-low Dispersion glass elements minimize chromatic aberration, provide higher resolution and superior contrast
Three aspherical lens elements minimize distortion, especially at the periphery, for superior optical performance
High-grade Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC) offers superior color reproduction and minimizes ghosting and flare
Silent Wave Motor for swift autofocus with superior accuracy and ultra-quiet operation
The rounded 7-blade diaphragm opening makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural
M/A mode allows rapid switching between autofocus and manual even during AF servo operation, with virtually no time lag
Internal Focusing (IF) design for smoother focusing and great body balance

    Nikon 12-24mm f/4.0 reviews

    AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 107.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Travel Lens I specialize in travel photography and found that people were put off by me using the D3s and lens. I bought a D7000 and outfitted it with the 12-24 so that I had a smaller profile and less imposing rig staring at people. I selected the 12-24 because of the fixed aperture. In the small markets and closed confines of the bazaars the lens works magic. It is sharp side to side with limited distortion. It is somewhat contrasty but most of that can be addressed in post processing. I use it now for environmental portraits, putting people in context of their surrounding ... large surroundings. It has replaced by 12-24 2.8 as the lens of choice for shooting these types of images.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from superb super wide I've wanted a super wide angle lens for quite some time and finally decided to settle on the 12-24mm Nikkor. This lens delivers exactly what I was craving in the wide angle realm and the variable focal length allows me to use it as a primary. Physically it is very well constructed with a solid feel, good balance, and no slackness in the zoom or focus rings. I often forget to use the included lens hood so there is a risk of flare from the sun but that can be expected with a wide angle. My only complaint is that there was no protective bag included and I thought they came standard when purchasing lenses, particularly at this price.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing performance at 12 mm The quality of images taken with this lens at 24mm is stunning. However, the performance of this lens at 12-14mm is poor, even when stopped down to f8-11. The corners are soft and images seem to lack the clarity and contrast evident at longer focal lengths. If you are purchasing this lens to complement a high-quality mid-range zoom (e.g. the Nikon 17-35 or 17-55mm f2.8) you may be disappointed. Expertise: 30+ years experience with Nikon equipment Problems Encountered: Weak performance at 12-14mm at all apertures. Previous Equivalent Item Owned: Nikon 17-55mm and 18-200mm zoom and 20mm f2.8 AIS lenses

Rated 4 out of 5 by from very good lens but... Indoor use was fine. But when I started using my lens outdoor, the images were not as I expected. It took me a while to figure out there were something wrong with the focus at infinity. I sent it back to Nikon and the problem was promptly fixed: Nikon changed the whole casting. So if your lens is soft, have it checked by Nikon, it is a manufacturing defect, not a design flaw. Otherwise, I love this ultra-wide. Apparently, I was not alone with that problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A GREAT SUPER WIDE ANGLE I have spent a great deal of time photographing in Southeast Asia. This is a wonderful lens for capturing the beauty of the temples, pagodas and mosques of Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. The radiant colors are easily captured with this light and comfortable small lens. Indoor scenes of praying monks come alive. An f 4.0 aperture is highly sufficient. The 2.8 aperture lens is much heavier, and much more expensive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reply to Not sharp This lens focuses beyond infinity and, due to the extreme wide angle covered, it can miss the infinity mark, especially when focusing at 12mm. One solution is to focus at 24 and then zoom to the desired focal length. Another, when focusing at infinity, is to manually set the focus at the waist of the infinity symbol.I initially ordered the Tokina 12-24 but the CA was so excessive that I sent it back and now have the Nikon 12-24. I shoot JPGs and don't want to waste time correcting CA. Problems Encountered: The above focus issue is about it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens I will use for wide shots of Landscape and various travel photos. The lens is a good match for my D300 camera and will also fit well on my wife's D70 if we want to use it that way. I previously used the D70 Kit lens for wide and Travel shots and that lens has done a good job for travel shots, a little lacking on some landscapes and I expect the 12-24 to really shine in that area. The included flower petal lens shade is a little large in my bag, but due to wide 12 mm that is probably necessary for function. Fit, Finish, markings and controls are as expected and top-notch. Weight is not a problem and is balanced well on the D300. I think the F4 across the zoom range will be satisfactory. Test Pictures are super sharp.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ken Rockwell was right! I use this lens everywhere. On a Nikon D300 this focal length covers alot of ground. The f/4 aperture is not a problem at all and while I mainly use it outdoors for landscape, architecture and such it has proven itself to be a valuable piece in my camera bag. Gets you that extra wide coverage for when you just can't back up. Niagara Falls never looked better than when I shot it with this lens. I have no con's to report at all. Great price also.
