Nikon HB-29 overview

  • 1Description

Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. This dedicated lens hood is designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Nikon HB-29 reviews

HB-29 Lens Hood is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 46.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK Replacement Item, but could be better This lens hood was purchased to replace a lost one for a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 lens. Thinking that the Nikon brand, though more expensive, would fit like the original, I purchased it. It fits pretty well when mounted on the lens for normal shooting, however if reversed (due to the length) for storing, it does not fit the lens well. It feels as though something is binding. The original Nikon lens hood worked great both ways, so there must be something a bit different. I have read that other off-brand replacements also have problems fitting, so I am unable to recommend another brand at this time. Still it works OK for shooting; just a little disappointed.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from better to buy 3rd party version I have Nikon lenses that I have used for 20 years with no problems with the lens hoods. I cannot say the same for the HB-29 Nikon lens hood for the 70-200mm f2.8 lens. It is easily cracked which is why there are multiple 3rd party versions being sold as replacement lens hoods. Problem is a design flaw as when the hood is inverted and attached to the lens collar for storing the lens in a camera bag or case, the ends of the hoods scallop fingers take all the stress and tend to crack. This area should have thicker plastic or a more pliable type of plastic.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect-fitting replacement The lens' original hood bit the dust when a strap slipped my shoulder and the camera, with the 70-200 mounted, landed hood-first on a concrete surface; the hood self-sacrificed and limited the damage to a piece of lens trim; that trim, a handy NPS rep, went back into place and looks original. The replacement hood gets as much work and seems to fit a little snugger than the original; but, eight year of use can wear on any plastic part. The hood fits perfectly, works fine and feels as secure as the original -- and that's what I expected out of a Nikon part.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A little too expensive for plastic I use this lens hood 100% of the time and it gets a lot of abuse. It is way too expensive for the quality but left with no choice but to purchase.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not secure in reverse position If I had one complaint about this lens hood it's that it doesn't snap on very securely when reversed. That is how I ended up losing mine. It just fell off while I was hiking. Maybe it was the original that came with the lens that was defective I don't know. I guess I'll find out with this new one I just ordered.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just as advertised! Same that came with the factory. Good price ....Reason i gave it 4 stars if Nikon's fault, not BH. When reversed, the hood falls off much more easily then I'd like

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works perfect on my 80-200 AF-S After my wife accidently dumped my 80-200 f/2.8 AF-S lens out of my bag, the stock lens hood (HB-7) took the brunt of the hit and broke. Even though the HB-29 was meant for the 70-200 f/2.8 lens, I took a chance and purchased it for my lens. It fit on my lens but the locking mechanism on the hood would not securely lock into place. The channel/groves of my lens are designed differently than the 70-200 so I carefully notched out the tapered edge of the channel until it was 90 degrees from the base of the lens and then it locked right in place. I know it's just about looks but I always preferred to petal-shape lens hood over the rounded HB-7 design. As always, B&H delivered fast and on time and hands down just has the best online shopping experience out there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Serves it purpose very well and sturdy I always have it on, even if reversed, on my 70 - 210 lens. I recently tripped and landed lens first on concrete. The lens hood was split but the lens itself worked fine without any need for repair or even any blemishes. That's why I'm buying a replacement!!
