    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great omni mic - even for live sound. Here's an anecdotal story that demonstrates the greatness of a good omnidirectional mic: I bought this mic for my adult son to use for live sound with his rock band. An omni for live sound?, you ask. I shared the same reservations. Well, read on. With the DPA, his vocal sounded much better than everyone else's, (whose mics range from $250-$450). So much so that the band's leader decided to upgrade his own headworn mic to a major brand cardioid costing only slightly less than the DPA. Guess which mic had more feedback problems in rehearsal - the DPA omni, or the other high-end cardioid? If you guessed the omni, I tricked you. The cardioid fed back more readily. In fact, my son says he could walk right in front of the speakers with no feedback. I've verified this fact observing their performances, but must admit to being a little surprised. Moral of the story: because a good omni has a more even frequency response than all but high end cardioids, it will feed back less, even though there is more leakage due to its omnidirectional pattern. (Not all leakage is bad leakage.) Rich vocal overtones, and transparent detail make this mic a standout in sonic quality, with a clear, intimate sound. It's hard to get that quality in a cardioid directional mic. The phase cancellations needed to achieve the cardioid pattern cancel vital harmonic detail that can never be recovered down line. Only the most expensive directionals minimize this effect. (I've never used the DPA headworn cardioids, but they may do precisely that.) The harmonic detail and superior transient response of the DPA 4066, also provide better intelligibility, so that vocals cut through the mix without being painfully loud. DPA mics, (formerly B&K), cost a little more than many, but they are actually a better value. The best tools in the hands of competent professionals make a big difference.
