Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

This Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di Lens incorporates a motor built into the lens itself, which gives it the capability to autofocus with all Nikon DSLR cameras (including the D40 and D40x). In addition, with the motor built into the lens, focusing will be quieter and more responsive.

The 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di lens is an ultra-compact lens. Its compactness makes it look and feel like an ordinary standard zoom lens, yet provides the versatility that a fast constant maximum aperture offers and will definitely reshape photographic horizons.

Features like LD glass elements and Internal Focusing put this lens in the same category of professional lenses as much bigger and more expensive Tamron lenses.

Digitally Integrated Design (Di), is a designation Tamron puts on lenses featuring optical systems designed to meet the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras.
LD glass elements reduces various aberrations while minimizing the fall-off of light at the corners
Features XR (extra refractive index) glass and efficient use of aspherical lenses

    Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 reviews

28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus Lens for Nikon SLR is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 254.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome. Primary lens used on my D700! After reading all the great reviews I bought this lens with a $50 instant rebate.... I have shot a few hundred photos in the last week and it is a very good lens. I have compared it to my Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. It is slightly less sharp and slower to focus on moving objects but not by much considering how much less expensive it is! Love the weight of it for a constant f/2.8 zoom. It perfectly fits my intended use of a portrait and walk around lens - was going to eventually upgrade to the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 but see now see no need to except perhaps if I become a full time pro shooter. Even then I would not sell this one! Highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for a great price I recently got this lens for low light photography and inside shooting, but during the initial testing I used is all over. This is a great buy. It is not the Nikon 27-70 2.8 but it is 75% less expensive. I love this lens. It is clear, clean, sharp, fast, focuses w\quickly and very versatile. I have a Nikon 28-300 which is my travel lens. Some may say this lens is wasteful due to overlap, but This lens is by far superior to the Nikon. I use it on my D610. It was worth every penny. When compared to the Nikon lens it does not appear as rugged or well built but the nikon lens is built like a tank. This is light and pleasant.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tamron lenses still perform at 100% I use this fast 2.8 lens in my film and television unit photography work. I need fast and sharp lenses to capture in low light conditions that are typical on film sets. I have used Tamron for over 15 years and have never been disappointed with them. I have looked for Nikon to produce a lens in this range and at this price. We tend to be rough on these lenses so replacement is a way of life. Tamron gives me the best performance at a rate that is easy on the budget. I used their 28-105 2.8 for many years and loved the results. Nikon never offered a fast lens in that range. I would recommend this brand to any serious photographer.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Love / Hate Relationship with this lens When I first purchased this lens, I absolutely loved it, using it on my Fuji S2 and S3 Pro cameras. Focus was relatively fast and accurate and sharpness was acceptable. Then I purchased a full-frame camera (D700). Edge to Edge sharpness is absolutely TERRIBLE on this camera. Center charpness is excellent. On a full length portrait at F8 in the studio, the center of the portrait (mid waist height) is very sharp, eyes and face, blurred and unprintable for anything over 8x10. Put the lens on my APS-C sensor cameras and it does fine again. Bokeh is nice, the price is right...just can't use it on my D700.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens for the Money I had a wedding to do and did not have a prime lens. I could not afford the 1700.00 Nikon Lens, after careful review and not being able to afford the Nikon I decided to take a chance on the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8. It was better than what I had. To my amazement the lens was sharp, fast, and lightweight. I can make a positive comment based on that I have rented the Nikon Lens several times and really could not tell the difference. I would definately purchace Tamron again and I thought I would NEVER say that. But hey I like my money... and if you don't have deep pockets I say go for it, and or if you like being smart with your money you'll be very pleased with this lens. I love it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightest mid-range zoom lens I needed a mid-range zoom lens for my Nikon D300s. After extensive research about this lens, I am very happy with my purchased. I love my Nikkor lenses, so I was debating weather to rent a Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G for 2 weeks for a trip or purchase a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. At the end, I decided to purchase this lens, because I didn't want to waste money on rental anymore and the hassle of dealing with the rental process (ex. insurance). This lens has everything I'm looking for and I love that its fast F/2.8 constant aperture. The range is wide enough for a walkaround lens on a 1.5 crop camera since I shoot mostly portrait. Lightweight is a plus compare to the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Major pleasant surprise I was surprised when I saw a zoom lens in this focal length with consistent aperture at f/2.8 that was so inexpensive. I thought for sure that the lens would perform like a cheap lens. I was majorly surprised at how wrong I was. I used the lens for portraits, casual family photos, and football (from the sidelines) and it performed excellent. I don't consider it a good football lens, but wanted to really run it through the wringer. The lens focused fast, has incredible image quality, and is very lightweight. Is it as good as the more expensive 24-70mm lenses? Well probably not if you want to pixel peep. But it is a stunning lens, and at this price it is beyond stunning.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect Zoom Lens for Perfect Price Before purchasing this lens I made a point to rent both it and it's Nikkor competitor, The 25-70/2.8. This lens was comparable to the Nikkor in sharpness and speed. I did notice a bit of very minor (almost undetectable) blurring around the edges with this lens when open all the way, but for my purposes this was a very small price to pay for the very big price difference between the two lenses. I especially like the fact that the aperture remains the same while I zoom in and out, trying to capture fast moving children. For me and my small family photography business, the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 will do just fine.
