FLM CB-58 FT with QRP-70 Overview

The CB-58 FTR Ball Head with QRP-70 Quick Release System from FLM is an aluminum alloy ball head that can support 132.3 lb. It has three locking knobs; one controls 360° panning and one controls the amount of friction and movement of the ball. The third knob controls FLM's patented tilt function. When the tilt function is activated, the ball moves along a straight line and acts as a tilt head. When the function is deactivated, you have full control over the movement of the ball in all directions.

The quick release system includes a dovetail clamp and plate with laser engraved scale numbers on the side so you can adjust your camera fore and aft by 40mm. The plate clicks into the base from above and is secured by the locking pin so you can adjust the base and then lock it into place by turning the locking lever. This prevents your camera from sliding out of the clamp while you're adjusting the camera's location. All parts are sourced and manufactured in Germany.

While panning, the PRS system locks your head every 15° and makes an audible click.
A quick locking mechanism at 0° allows you to quickly attach or remove the head to or from your tripod.
A notch in the head allows the camera to tilt 90° to shoot in portrait orientation.

Check out "Battle of the Titans" on DP Review. This is the sturdies of them all. With a full frame professional Nikon camera, array of Nikon G lenses, Gitzo 3542LS,Gitzo 5542LS tripods and now FLM CB 58mm FTR ballhead in my collection, I cannot ask for more.

I bought it use with a 4x5 camera. Very precisely made. The adjustable tension anvd tilt only functions made it very controlable with heavy cameras

This ball head was pricey, but I looked at a bunch of options and reviews. I think purchasing a good ball head is a lot of personal preference. This is a large heavy unit, but I have a Nikon D4s and some big lenses and I wanted something I could depend on without fear of damaging my equipment. This unit can take a lot of height and the adjustments are unlimited.

This ball head is like a tank. I use a nikon D5 with 70-200 lens on the head and it never shake in the wind.

Built like a tank, good German quality was looking at the RRS 55 mm ball head which is about the same price as this one but without the locking tilt feature or the or the PRS system locks your head every 15 which is nice feature as well. Completely happy with this head.

question

Will the qrp70 be blocked by one of the knobs when it is tilted down to 90 degree? How will the L bracket be in the same situation? My camera is d800e and lens nikkor 14-24mm with Lee filter system and 100-160 Singh ray ND filter. They are bulky.
Asked by: Paul
No, the top knob of the camera plate will be out of the way when tilted 90 degrees into the cut-out section of the FLM CB-58 FTR Ball Head. An L-bracket should behave the same but that all depends upon which model it is, how it was designed and built, and by which company.

question

Will the quick release system hold on (clamp tightoly) to the Really Right Stuff L-brackets or Kirk L-brackets?
Asked by: Richard
If you need Arca/RRS compatibility, you should consider the CB-58FTR/SRB-60, which is the same ball head, but with an Arca-compatible clamp: https://<a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1085533-REG/flm_12_58_960_cb_58ftr_professional_ft_series.html target= _blank >www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1085533-REG/flm_12_58_960_cb_58ftr_professional_ft_series.html</a>
