Nikon SJ-1 overview

  • 1Description

The SJ-1 allows for modification of the flash output to be matched to the background scene. This is especially useful for digital cameras where "white balance" can be controlled.

For instance, when shooting with a flash under fluorescent lights the foreground will be white, but the background will still have a green cast. By using a green filter the flash output gets converted to match the rest of the scene, and the camera's White Balance setting can then be set to "Fluorescent".

The blue, yellow, red and amber filters can be used for creative lighting control, and can add dramatic colors to the image, especially when more than one flash is used.

Included in the kit are 20 filters, in 8 types:

FL-G1 (Fluorescent)

FL-G2 (Fluorescent)

TN-A1 (Tungsten)

TN-A2 (Tungsten)

Nikon SJ-1 reviews

SJ-1 Color Filter Set is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 66.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Old school, still the best school I'm a working pro with 30 plus years experience. Many newer photographers forget the value of balancing light sources. These little gems match the existing light with your flash. You'll instantly see how they turn your image into the one people want. You won't be making excuses as to why the people in front are fine, but the background people are 'green' or 'orange.' As for value, to me, they are priceless. You may find something similar for less, but you know Nikon won't put their name on it unless it works with their flash. And for me, I'd rather spend an extra 10 bucks and know it's going to work for my client. (Or my family)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from beware of the heat Not sure if using SB800 has anything to do with it, but be aware not to shoot too frequently with the color gels. Theyre made of a very thin plastic, and the heat coming from the speedlight will crinkle the gels. After only three shots my red gel looked like its been in use for several months! The color has not faded, so I still use it (with a little masking tape to keep it in place). That aside, the gels are very consistent and fun to use!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Creative Add-on Obviously, as intended works great to balance with the ambient light, but also great to give you wonderful blue skies using the CTO and tungsten balance. Only had it for 2 weeks so far, but looking forward to using it more, and in combination with umbrella and snoot. Only problem discovered so far is that the bottom doesn't always lay flush against the face of the flash. I'm a Nikon shooter, my buddy uses Canon, and these work just fine on his 420 EX (?) in addition to the Nikon flashes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Effects! I have been using these filters for about 2 weeks now and have had awsome results. The colors are great! This would be a 5 out of 5 if there was a way for the filters to last longer if you are taking repeated shots the filters crumple up due to the heat. I would recommend if you want to do different lighting scenarios. Even cooler results with multiple strobes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love these Gels! I know, everybody says Why pay so much when you can just get a big sheet and cut them to the right size? Well, I decided to go ahead and get these, and I've been really pleased with that decision for two reasons: 1. They are pre-cut with a tab that slides down between the wide-angle diffuser and the lens. This makes using these gels a snap! No need to cut out little pieces or tape them on. Bing-bang, you're done. No hassle! 2. It's like a variety pack. If you're just starting to play with gels (as I am), you might enjoy getting an assortment to different flavors so you can get a feel for what you might like more of in the future. Plus, they comes in a great little case that slides right into the pocket on your Speedlight's soft case! Personally, I don't think you can go wrong ordering these, unless you know exactly what kinds of gels you want, and don't mind spending time with scissors and tape. But if you're willing to shell out a little extra cash and get a nice set all ready to go, this is for you.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well-planned set Can't really say much about gels -- but I can say that Nikon did a nice job in realizing that filter sets need more than one of each filter! They work well and fit well, but the case they came with is a bit on the flimsy and useless side.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great! Simply put, These work great! Not perfect though. They fit on fairly easily and the execution of design is very simple. The only drawback is that in order for it to truly stay put you need to pull out the diffusion plate (on an SB-600) and I don't always want the wide spread that it gives. They will however lay pretty flat so long as you give them a nice sharp crease where it tells you to. Simple design, very effective, nice storage case, but not perfect.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Filter Set For color balancing SB-800s, for coloring backgrounds, or for special effects or accents, these gel filters work excellently with the SB-800. There are 20 filters, with 2 of each color and 4 of red and blue. The fact that there are multiples and they are pre-cut to fit exactly makes them a better deal than buying a Roscoe sample pack and cutting them to fit. All in all, it is a pretty cost-effective, simple way to extend the usefulness of the SB-800.
