Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 Overview

  • 1Description

Designed as a DX workhorse, the Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED is a 25.5-82.5mm-equivalent zoom characterized by its bright maximum aperture and sophisticated optical design. The fast f/2.8 constant maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also enables greater control over depth of field when working with selective focus techniques. The optical design incorporates three aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion elements, which help to greatly reduce spherical and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range. A Super Integrated Coating also minimizes surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy. Complementing the optics, this lens also sports a Silent Wave Motor for fast and accurate autofocus along with full-time manual focus control.

Standard zoom covers wide-angle to portrait-length focal lengths and is designed for Nikon F-mount DX-format cameras, where it provides a 25.5-82.5mm-equivalent range.
Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and also affords greater control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Three aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Three extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

    Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 Reviews

    AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 322.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome lens! I use this for weddings. I actually traded in my D700 and stepped down to a D7000. I was using my 24-70mm f2.8 lens on my D7000, and it just wasn't wide enough at the wide end. So I bought this 17-55mm f2.8 lens with some reservation about its quality compared to the 24-70mm. I'm not disappointed at all! The pictures are sharp and the colors are great. I only have one small complaint and that is the focus ring. It is very narrow and at the very back of the lens adjacent to the camera body. When you are zooming in and out, you sometimes hit your other hand because the zoom ring is so close to the back. Otherwise, this lens rocks!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not What I Expected This lens has excellent build quality and the expected weight of a pro level lens. I shoot mostly wedding and family portraiture and this lens does not deliver the sharpness I want. I also own the Nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR lens and it delivers outstanding picture quality. I expected the same from this pro level lens. I tried several different lighting situations and F-Stop ranges on my D300. It just doesn't deliver the quality I want for my images. My copy also tends to backfocus. Everyone seems to really love this lens so I may send it back to Nikon for recalibration and see if that helps. Hopefully, my copy of this lens just needs to be tweaked.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from pro level build and image quality for dx/crop sensor camera I've used this lens as a back up on a d7100 - I also use a d750 and 24-70 2.8 Nikon as my main camera. It's a great lens, built like a tank (metal and heavy) and serves its purpose well for its focal length. If you don't understand the benefit of a constant 2.8 aperture, then you are probably wasting your money. I shoot events and weddings and need this focal length and constant aperture and may take 100,000 images per year so I need the build quality. If I had a d7200 or the new d500 and wanted high quality, this is worth the money. Otherwise, to a casual shooter who views their images mainly on a cell phone, it's probably a little more than you need.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Sharp & Professional Quality Images. I read many reviews about this Lens but could't decide to buy OR not to buy. Finally decided to get it. I put it on my New D-7100, took many shoots with it, in day light, clouds, indoor photos, natural light source, group photos etc., in the beginning I compared these pics with the kit lens many time but with many images I saw a big difference of Sharpness because 17-55 is way better than the kit lens 18-105 or 18-55 etc., it is wide angle & f2.8 is real benefit. It's pricey & very bulky .75 Kg weight but has an excellent build quality, superior glass, fast & accurate focus, gives sharpness & a real professional look.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Phenomenal piece of glass This lens is extraordinary in its clarity, bokeh and sharpness. You see the difference when you look through it, let alone when you see the incredible images it creates. This lens is superb for portraits, weddings and other events or just as a general all purpose lens. It is a little heavy but trust me, it's worth its weight in platinum, or should I say oil. I just wish I hadn't waited so long to get it. I've been shooting for over 30 yrs and have never seen glass as crisp and well made as this lens and the 70-200 2.8 VR, both of which I broke down and bought after getting an extra paycheck a few months ago. Save and get this lens. You won't regret it!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Glass From the moment I unboxed this thing of beauty I was in love. I bought it so that I could have the quality I get from my 50 and 35mm primes but with the versatility of a zoom. This met the challenge quite easily. I wish I'd purchased this a few years ago when I bought the 14mm wide angle (which I've now sold to get this one, hehe). It has already replaced my 18-200 kit lens as my everyday lens. It's super fast and the images are amazing. I've used it in the studio quite a bit as well as out and about to include a recent trip to and old abandoned sanitarium in Beelitz, Germany.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still Great Made a review in July 2013 when I first bought this gem ... been through a couple of cameras since and now been having the D500 for over a year now ... photos are sharper than ever and now that I can take photos with little light with the D500, I've done some crazy high ISO with hardly any grain when I had to ... the f/2.8 comes in handy for that ... no VR is not an issue ... take shots at 1/20th sec and no blur at all ... so after the test of time, I'm more pleased that ever ! 17-70mm would be even better, but this thing stays on the camera and change to bigger zoom when necessary ... one GREAT lens !!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from VERY Solid This is essentially the equivalent (more or less) of Nikon's full-frame 24-70 f2.8 lens. On a DX camera, the 17-55 is roughly a 26-80 mm performer. Lens is exceptionally sharp, great contrast, and has a superb bokeh when used at apertures conducive to producing limited depth of field. Autofocus is fast and quiet, even in low light. This is a highly useful workhorse, well-built and very solid. Expensive? Yes. But as with all things camera, the best quality costs money. There are lesser alternatives in Nikon's line of DX lenses but all others have trade-offs. I highly recommend this lens.
