Nikon HB-31 overview

  • 1Description

Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. This dedicated lens hood is designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Nikon HB-31 reviews

HB-31 Lens Hood is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 30.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replacement Hood These hoods are so great I'm on my 3rd one!! First one was destroyed in the first 3 weeks of ownership. My camera bag was not closed and my camera with the lens came crashing out onto the pavement. The hood is reversed on the lens for storage and it took most of the impact. It was crushed and unusable. But, it SAVED my $1300 lens!! My second one was last off a cliff in Yosemite as I set it poorly on top of my camera bag. It fell down onto it's side and appropriately rolled off the cliff. Hope I don't ever have to buy a 4th!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Mostly good, but... Overall, this lens hood is very functional as a lens hood, protects the lens nicely, and reversing it for stowage is convenient. HOWEVER it doesn't lock on the lens very securely and has a tendency, especially when in the reversed storage position, to work loose and fall off. I had to purchase a replacement precisely because this happened and I didn't notice it until it was long gone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from quality and performance I use my HB-31 lens hood by Nikon for daylight product photography in natural daylight settings... Using this hood has given my photos a finished look that filters in the best part of the light and uses its ability to refract glare. Comparing to other names in the this category this is the best I found as its also well made and durable. I have no complaints!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Durable Lens Hood. This is a great product for your Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 lens. It's a very durable plastic lens hood and offers great protection on both top and bottom as well as the sides. It has a locking mechanism so it won't twist off your lens. I bought this one as a replacement should my original hood break.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lens Saver original lens hood took a hit during sports activity=broke lens hood but saved lens & camera. Had to replace lens hood and will not use lens without one. The small investment for lens hood is so minimal compared to a destroyed lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great addition Though it comes with the lens if you purchase new. If you don't have it it is a must have during daylight shooting

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Hood I had this lens hood on my 17-55 mm lens for almost 6 years. I use this lens all the time for work, but while overseas on my honeymoon I walked down some slick steps with camera in hand, slipped and fell and figured my lens (and maybe camera) was probably gone. The lens hood cracked and my camera and lens amazingly still worked. So, not only is this good for reducing flare, but it did protect the lens in this particular instance. I have now purchased a new one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from GREAT BUT COULD HAVE A TIGHTER CLICK-ON Being Nikon, it works great but it could have a tighter, more positive fitting click-on when you attach it to the lens. Most professional photojournalists will probably just secure it to their lens by wrapping duct tape around it. While that works okay, it becomes a real pain when you need to remove the hood for adjustment of a polarizer or other filters. I prefered the old Nikon lens hoods that screwed on like filters.
