Nikon Circular Polarizer II Overview

This Circular Polarizer II Filter from Nikon is a 77mm multicoated filter that minimizes flare and glare, providing increased saturation and clearer images that are crisp and have more contrast.

The polarization effect is visible in the viewfinder or on the LCD screen as the front ring is rotated. When shooting on a bright day, the saturation of a blue sky may be controlled, which enhances the definition of cloud formations. In addition, when shooting into water, the reflections often associated with landscape or scenic photography may be minimized or eliminated. A circular polarizer is an essential tool for landscape photography. When shooting through a glass window, museum showcase, or car window, reflections and glare will be reduced allowing the subject behind the glass to be captured. This slim filter ring design allows this filter to be used on wide-angle lenses with a reduced potential for vignetting the image corners.

Note:
Circular polarizers are specifically designed for use with auto-focus SLR cameras (They will also work on manual systems without problems)
Multicoated glass minimizes flare and glare on the sensor or film plane
This filter eliminates ultraviolet rays from outdoor shots as well as polarizing the light to remove reflections, and increase color saturation, without affecting the overall color balance
Effective with cameras that use beam splitters in the path of the TTL light meter and with AF cameras

Nikon Circular Polarizer II Reviews

Could Be Better

I have been a dedicated user of Nikon gear for going on two decades. So went it came to buying a circular polarizer for my new Z-mount 24-120mm lens I went with this filter. The ratings on this filter are great, but I wonder if that's primarily because of the Nikon name. I've owned this filter now for about 6 months and agree with other reviewers that the optics are excellent. But I have two big issues with it. First, the coatings on this filter do not seem as robust as other CPL's in the same price range (B+W, Hoya HD). It doesn't bead up water as well, and it is more difficult to clean dust and fingerprints off. Second, the minimal knurling on the inner ring is the same as the outer ring, so it is hard to feel which ring is turning when trying to thread the filter onto a lens. A few days ago, I was out taking some landscape photos and while I was rotating the outer polarizing ring the filter fell off the lens, landed on some rocks, and dented the outer ring. A careless mistake on my part for sure, but this happened because it is difficult to feel if the filter threads are properly engaging the lens threads. I am going to replace this CPL with a Nisi True Color Pro Nano CPL which has pronounced raised knurling on the inner ring, and supposedly superior glass coatings.

Great with no helo

I'm replacing all my CPLs and testing this one. It does not seem to have the helo problems of most of the others I've tried.

Haven't used it yet, but looking forward to it

Didn't have one of these on my recent trip to Mexico, wish I did as some of my pictures would have been much better. Unfortunately, since I've gotten home from vacation its been cloudy so no chance to use it yet.

Quality glass that effectively removes glare from water, green wet leaves, and other shiny things in the landscape.

Fantastic Polarizing Filter

This is a great filter. I saw some reviews saying it was hard to unscrew but I had no such problems on my Nikon Brand lenses. I was concerned that there would be less effect because I had a Quantaray polarizing filter years ago and it was much darker, but this one is perfect. It is well coated and easy to clean, and allows for maximum light transmission. It seemed to make just over a stop difference in exposure value. I tested both my 62 and 77 mm Nikon Circular Polarizer II Filters yesterday and I was impressed with quality, Clarity, Color Neutrality, and most of all the great effect that brings out those colors so well. I was shooting sandstone cliffs over high breaking surf on a beautiful coastline, and the sandstone has a very grainy surfact that reflects a lot of light and detracts from the color that you see with your eyes (especially with sunglasses). With the polarizer the deeper hidden colors of the cliff could shine thru, the clouds popped in a more dramatic sky, and the ocean looked deeper, clearer and more blue.

Nikon glass superb

I always try to use only Nikon products on my Nikon cameras and lenses so when I recently purchased my new 50mm 1.8 for my Z6 II there was no question I would get a Nikon polarizer. I am saddened that Nikon no longer makes many of its filters, but B+W are also very good. This polarizer from Nikon fits well and has no distortion whatsoever and thin enough that you can mount more than one filter with no vignette.

Is this the correct polarizer to use with the Nikon F6 film camera?
Asked by: Venessa
I am sure it will work. But you will need a lens that accepts 77mm filters. The camera can handle the polarizer, best used on a tripod if possible as you will loose stops. You will have to make various shutter, ISO/ASA, and aperture adjustments to make up for the lack of light reaching the film plane.
