Olympus EC-14 overview

  • 1Description

When you need more telephoto in a smaller package, the EC-14 1.4x Teleconverter from Olympus is an ideal choice when using Olympus Four Thirds mount cameras and lenses. With only 1 stop of light loss the 1.4x converter still provides fast super telephoto capability for sports and nature photography. For instance, turn your Zuiko Digital 300mm f/2.8 into a 420mm f/4.0 (35mm equivalent 840mm f/4.0). The EC-14 is compatible with all Zuiko Digital lenses, and is fully multi-coated to retain the high lens performance you expect and built to be drip-proof and dust-proof.

Teleconverters are best used with longer telephoto lenses and are not recommended for lenses wider than 50mm, e.g. 28-105mm (35mm format).

    Olympus EC-14 reviews

    EC-14 1.4x Teleconverter is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 28.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Accessory I purchased this 1.4x teleconverter over four years ago with the E-1 and several lenses and other accessories. The plan was to get close to the 300mm lens as possible without dropping the $ needed. With my 50-200mm stretched this teleconverter gives me 280mm (1.4 X 200)for under $ additional bones. Very nice. I look forward to getting my hands on the new ec-20 2.0x teleconverter. I wish it was available back then. I will gladly pay another $480 to double my 50-200mm. This does work well with all my lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very handy device I used this teleconverter with my Olympus 50-200 SWD telephoto lens, and got some fantastic results. The teleconverter is small and neat, and with it, my telephoto lens becomes a 70-280mm telephoto, with a loss of only 1 f-stop of light. This makes for a pretty powerful and pretty fast telephoto combination. The teleconverter is weather sealed, as is the the camera (OM-D E-M1) and the lens, so it is a great combination for wildlife photography. I used recently on a boating trip, where I was photographing Osprey and Bald Eagles, and I got some nice really shots. The lens does not appear to degrade the optical performance of the lens in any way -- it is still a very sharp lens with the teleconverter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Addition to My Gear I am not yet able to purchase the 50-200 that I do intend to add to my gear one day. I bought this as a less expensive alternative to get more range for my 12-60 and 18-180. It works flawlessly. It is a well made piece of gear, solid, but not too heavy. Even with the lower end 18-180 the autofocus is smooth and quick. The loss of one stop is not an issue, as my photography is primarily nature based. One day it will be a great way to extend the range of the 50-200.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good investment for the bag I really debated whether or not I should make this purchase. Having less than a year or so ago dropping the coin for the Bigma aka Sigma 50-500 lens as an obvious upgrade from my Zuiko 70-300. I really wish that I would have purchased this first. At the level of photography that I am and and the gear I use, I am comfortable with it. Sure you lose a little stop, but I have not been bothered by it. It makes it a nice all around piece to carry in the car and have on hand rather than lugging out the big lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply Superb... Exceptional optical quality as is the norm with Olympus. I opted for the 1.4 converter vs. the 2.0 for the drip/dust proof capability of their hi-grade series. Gives my 50-200 zoom a maximum reach of 560mm (35mm equivalent), with only one stop loss. For the combined price/quality, hard to beat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great optical quality Use it with my 50-200 for wild life and extra reach paired with low impact on visual quality, works as a charm. Providing there's enough light (and not much is really required) it works well even with the 70-300! Can't imagine a better quality 840mm lens for less money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Adds Versatility to Lens Collection I originally bought the EC-14 to use with my High Grade 50-200mm lens. I already have the EC-20, but that combo had some problems focusing in low light and I had even more trouble controlling camera shake when using it hand held. With the EC-14, aside from the loss of one f/stop, I have not noticed any drop off in performance with this combo. No loss of sharpness, detail, or overall image quality, and a significant reduction in the camera shake problem. Focus is fast and accurate too . . . even in low light. However, as pleased as I am with the EC-14/50-200mm combo, The tele-converter may actually spend as much or more time partnered with the 40-150mm kit lens that has been gathering dust since I acquired the 50-200. The 40-150 is significantly lighter and a great lens for the price, but lacked that extra little bit of reach I wanted for shooting travel photos. I'll still use the 50-200 for birds and wildlife shooting, but I have a hunch the EC-14 coupled with the lighter weight kit lenses will be just the ticket for a long day of sightseeing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Olympus quality I use the EC-14 only under bright daylight conditions to convert my ZD 50-200 f/2.8-3.5 telephoto effectively into 70-280 f/4.0-4.9, with essentially no loss in image quality. Some people use the EC-14 with the ZD 70-300 lens, but this lens has some image softness near its long end, which the EC-14 will magnify by 40%. This often proves unacceptable, and thus the EC-14 is much less useful for this lens than for the sharper ZD 50-200.
