Photographers' Formulary PyroCat-HD Reviews
Best Pyro on the market !
Pyrocat hd is one the best Pryro formulas on the market, full film speed and great shadow details ! Easy to mix and use, if you process a lot of black and white negatives then this is a great buy for how much developer you get cost wise.
This developer does have high acutance.
I am using this chemistry for black & white stand development. I am new to Pyrocat development and my initial rolls of 120 and 135 look good. I am noticing very sharp edges (acutance) that at first made me think the images had been extra sharpened by the scanner. The sharpening functions were not touched during the scanning process, so it is true, this developer does have high acutance. I like what this developer can do, but I did not like all the powdered chemistry that had to be mixed to make solution 'A'. There were four baggies of chemistry to mix for 'A' and some were very little amounts, but big chunks. I do not like powdered chemistry and will try and purchase liquid if it ever comes available. Because the films look good, I am giving this product review five stars, but I probably will not purchase it again in powdered form.
Very good pyro developer
I use it for Kodak T-Max 400 medium format films using the minimal agitation method. It does a beautiful job: fine grains and nice gradients. A bit sensitive for the way of agitation: too speedy rotation might result uneven development. I buy this dry version so I can be sure about the date from which the shelf life is counted.
The Pyro you love with less developing time
Having used PMK Pyro for a couple years now I was really looking forward to trying Pyrocat-HD, and man was I surprised, the same sharpness, less stain on the negatives, and less developing time. Works great with both large and medium format films. If you're looking for the fine grain you expect out of xtol and the sharpness of Rodinol, then this is your developer as it's the best of both worlds. You will see a speed loss on your film, but hey, keeps the grain down and makes it look oh so nice! Even in powdered form it's super easy to mix up.
Developer is great. I don't know that I would buy the powdered version again though. I would like to avoid having to mix all the chemicals myself.
For the pyro developing
Low cost and long shelf life in addition to little toxic than the others.
Great soup, bad packaging.
Pyrocat HD is a truly superb developer unless the sodium bisulfate leaks from its poorly packaged little bag into the box and then all over the floor of my kitchen when I open it, much to the horror of my wife. To package potentially harmful chemicals with nothing more than a dodgy heat crimp is unacceptable and dangerous. Good thing this wasnt PMK!
