Ideal for boaters who often find themselves on rough or rolling seas or outdoor enthusiasts who won't let bad weather keep them inside, the Nikon 8x40 Action Extreme ATB Binocular is an invaluable addition to any kit.

Its moderate-sized objective lenses deliver enhanced low-light performance versus smaller models, without the associated bulk or additional weight of larger ones, enabling them to be worn around the neck or carried without causing fatigue. To help mitigate the disorientation and discomfort often experienced when looking through binoculars on the water, the Action Extreme has a wide field of view and a comfortable exit pupil that keeps the entire scene in view and minimizes the movement of the horizon-line, plus a long eye relief that provides the room to back the eyes off the eyepieces for a more comfortable viewing position. The traditional Porro prism design, BAK4 prism glass, and anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics deliver immersive high-contrast views that are bright and sharp, with accurate colors, and a rich depth of field.

Complementing this optical performance are design details that allow the Action Extreme to withstand the rigors of outdoor life. The Porro prism design has an inherently balanced and comfortable feel in the hand for long-duration observation sessions, and the chassis is wrapped in a rubber armor that provides a sure and reliable grip in cold and wet weather. Its optical tubes are nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof, and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature and environmental conditions. A tethered one-piece ocular rainguard covers the eyecups as they hang around the neck and prevents rain and spraying water from filling them, and the object lens caps can clip onto the neck strap to keep them safe from blowing overboard or being lost on the forest floor

From the trail, to the range, to the boat, the 8x40 Action Extreme binocular is engineered to deliver the performance required by discerning observers without the bulk and weight of larger models.

Optical Performance
  • Moderate 8x magnification brings subjects in close while ensuring a wide field of view and exit pupil, and minimizing the appearance of visible hand shake — essential for glassing on the water
  • Moderate 40mm objective lenses provide improved low-light performance versus smaller-objective models, without adding excessive weight
  • Traditional Porro prism design makes it comfortable to hold, and presents a rich depth of field
  • High-index BAK4 prisms deliver a round exit pupil, and a crisp and clear image with limited edge distortion
  • Anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics produce neutral and accurate color fidelity, and improve contrast and image brightness
  • Wide 60° apparent angle of view provides sweeping views, with less disorientation, which is commonly felt when glassing on rough or rolling water
  • 430-foot field of view at 1000 yards
Use and Handling
  • Large textured and slip-resistant center fast-focusing knob is easy to manipulate in cold or wet weather, or while wearing gloves
  • Right-eye dioptric correction enables users to compensate for individual optical prescriptions for clearer views; large adjustment lever is easy to find and use
  • 56-72mm interpupillary adjustment range allows use by a wide variety of people
  • Twist-up/click-stop rubber eyecups for comfortable use with or without eyewear
  • Tripod mountable with optional adapter enables hands-free use to eliminate hand shake/vibrations and arm fatigue
  • Long 17.2mm eye relief helps to reduce eye strain and improves viewing comfort
  • Comfortable 5mm exit pupil will completely cover pupils to keep the full scene in view and limits disorientation

8x40 Action Extreme ATB Binocular is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 58.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sharp and sturdy but heavy and large These binoculars seem very well made. They feel sturdy and precise. The views are very sharp. Even at night, stars were resolved into points of light without any aberrations. They are also easy and comfortable to hold and adjust. One big selling point for me was that they have a 8.3 degrees of view, the largest I've seen in 8x40 and similar binoculars. Unfortunately they are quite large and heavy despite their relatively modest 40mm objective lenses. They are not something you would carry with you on a hike, at least for me. In summary great high quality binoculars but best suited for observing from home, car or at a sporting event and not for carrying around on walks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bins for birding Just purchased these recently, great service from B&H as always, Purolator ground shipping to Canada in 3 days flat at a very reasonable rate, thank you B&H. The bins themselves are great very clear even in low light, went on a guided bird trek to a local park in Toronto and had no problem at all using these at 7 am on a cloudy and overcast day. Great value, good quality and warranty as can be expected from a Nikon product and fantastic service from B&H. That's the reason I keep coming back here for all my purchases, I don't write reviews but this time I felt I have to share a hassle free shopping experience & superior customer service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One Fantastic Buy in Binoculars I photograph birds about 99% of the time. I needed a pair of binoculars to help me spot smaller birds at a distance. For en effective purchase price of about $85 (with Gift Card rebate) you simply cannot find a better pair of binoculars for the price. Are there better binoculars out there? Of course - but not at this price/performance ratio. The eye relief is great; the focusing knob is smooth; bright, clear optics; and highly rated by others in the know about technology (such as Cornell Ornithology Labs). The Nikon warranty/replacement feature is icing on the cake. I would like to say that if you can find a better pair of binoculars for this price, I'd almost be willing to buy them for you. They are that good.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from GOOD FOR THE PRICE I bought these to replace my old Nikon "Action" 8X40CF " binoculars. Though approximately the same size as the older ones, these are a bit heavier. The optics are not as good and I dislike the turn-and-slide rubber eyecups. They turn too easily when putting them up against your face. The diopter control is more difficult to adjust and the markings are barely readable. Also, the carrying case does NOT have a built-in strap, so unless you have a strap attached to the binoculars themselves (which I don't), forget about hanging it over your shoulder. I'm using my old case as it DOES have the strap attached. Overall, they are good for the price. And yes, they are made in China.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great binoculars for eye glass wearers! I use these for bird watching and have FINALLY found a pair of binoculars that work for me. The collapsible eyepiece adapters allow use with or without eyeglasses. But my eyelashes are always in the field of view when using binoculars without my eyeglasses. So finding a binocular that works WITH my glasses is an EXTREME PLUS.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from love these binoculars! these binoculars are very nice they let tons of light in and are very clear, great for night and low light times. I use them for everything from looking at wildlife to the moon and stars. the eye covers are loose and will probably not get used. neck strap is very nice and comfortable but the binoculars are on the heavy side but i don't see any real problems. i am very pleased with the product after extensively looking for about a month of almost all roofs and porro binos under $300

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A winner in its class Although I haven't yet gone to the soccer game in the stadium (that's the first definite use I plan for these), I'm sure these binoculars are up to the task of giving a very wide field of view and being plenty bright.A friend bought a pair of Bushnell 8x42 Waterproof binoculars ($45 from ...), and the Nikon binoculars are noticeably (although not remarkably) better, especially in the image evenness across the whole field. The view in the Nikons is slightly brighter, too. I'm VERY happy with the optic quality of the Nikons: the binoculars also come with a decently WIDE strap, obviating any need that I see for buying a separate strap. Also, the Nikons had a thoughtful system for attaching the lens caps to the strap so you don't lose them when they are removed from protecting the lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sturdy binoculars with great clarity I bought these binoculars for my husband and they quickly exceeded both of our expectations. We intend to use them on land for everyday nature observation and also on the water while sailing. So far, we have been impressed with the clarity and sturdy build. Feels solid in your hand, whereas most of the other binoculars in this price range felt flimsy by comparison. Seems to be a best in class product for the price. We also wear glasses and they have offered great visibility with little effort. They are a dependable pair and I'm sure we'll enjoy for years to come.
