Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

Spanning an immensely versatile wide to telephoto range, the EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM is a Canon L-series zoom well-suited for travel use or other situations where a one-lens kit is ideal. Using aspherical elements and ultra-low dispersion glass, both chromatic and spherical aberrations are well-corrected for notable sharpness and clarity throughout the zoom range. A Super Spectra coating also helps to minimize flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy, especially when working in backlit and bright conditions.

Beyond the optical attributes, this 28-300mm is also characterized by its advanced three stop-effective Image Stabilizer system to minimize the appearance of camera shake. Also complementing handling is a sophisticated ring-type USM, which provides quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed for use in trying environmental conditions and it has a removable rotating tripod collar to benefit working atop a tripod or monopod.

All-in-one 28-300mm zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 44.8-480mm equivalent focal length.
Three ultra-low dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Two aspherical elements minimize spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to three shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to two different ranges to suit different applications: 8.2'-infinity or 2.3'-infinity.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Removable rotating tripod collar is included and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Even after calibrating, this lens does not produce a sharp image.

Love it.

Been waiting to get my hands on this lens mainly for the range 28-300. I've had it out a few times and so far so good. The other reason is it's going to be perfect hiking so there'll be no need carry 2 lenses. It also works great with the cotton g3 harness for hands free hiking.

My wife loves taking pictures outdoors but doesn't always want to take the lens case and all her lenses with her. I bought her this for Christmas and she's been practicing with it since then. She likes the zoom range and the quality of the pictures so far. She's still getting used to the push/pull zoom as opposed to all our other lenses which are twist zoom but other than that the lens is great. I Will have to wait on a long-term review but knowing canon's quality of the L-Series, I am not worried. If you want one lens for many situations, this just might be the lens for you.

It does what it's supposed to, heavily.

The lens does everything it's supposed to as an L lens; sharp as a tack in decent light, good range for narrowing in or large swaths of scenery, very to zoom once one has the feel for the push-pull system (the 100-400mm I had prepped me). It is, also, the heaviest lens I have. It' hasn't affected any pictures for me yet, though. I monopod would be helpful for those that find it too heavy. The range and quality of the shots it takes are worth the effort.

The Best..

Canon 28 300 3.5 - 5.6

By John

This review is about the Canon 28-300 3.5 - 5.6. The main reason for this purchase was the versatility of the lens. In regards to the image quality I have provided few pictures. So you be the Judge. Images taken out of the camera body. No enhancement were used. Taken with the Canon EOS R5.. AND YES I had no issues using the 1.4 x iiii converter and still had Auto focus. Yes you do lose light the 5.6 with the 1.4 = F 7.84 The way you install this is to pull out the lens to 300 mm attach the converter and keep in mind when you pull in 50 mm becomes the minimum . You can not pull in any further the teleconverter lips sits inside the lens barrel. Be very careful not to pull in with force . You can damage the inside of the lens barrel and the converter. I am very happy with the image quality. Judge for your self. This lens is a Beast I held it all day at the races. Overall saved me time from using Primes. john joulakian

question

what is a focus limiter switch?
Asked by: Anonymous
A focus limiter simply restricts the range of distances the camera will attempt to focus at. This improves both the speed of focus and the accuracy, as it is assumed you are only interested in subjects within the range you have selected.

Does this work with any extender? I have Canon 5D Mark 2 and 3 and 7D. Is it compatible with all of them?

No, this lens is not compatible with any tele-extenders or teleconverters. Zoom lenses whose widest focal is less than 70mm are not compatible with teleconverters.
