This is a Lowel Rifa-Lite EX55 Softbox Light. This softbox opens like an umbrella and its removable front diffuser measures 21 x 21" (53 x 53 cm).

Compact, lightweight, and self-contained, the Rifa-Lite uses a simple design approach as old as the umbrella to achieve its quick and easy setup and strike capabilities. The EX series of Rifa-Lites enables you to change out the fixture's socket to make use of cooler-running fluorescent bulbs.

Front Diffusion
A state of the art, woven glass fabric, heat-resistant 21 x 21" (53 x 53 cm) front diffuser provides sufficient illumination with soft shadows.
Multi-Voltage
Accepts bulbs of different wattages and voltages, with the appropriate adapter(s).
Compact
Compact folded size (17") allows it to fit into many of Lowel's smallest location light kits.

Sometimes the lite fixture wont slide back and click into place!!   Mostly it works fine, except for this problem.   What am I doing wrong?

Small and versatile. Easy for on location setup. If your on a time crunch or running late, this light box will not take any extra time for you to set, light and shoot. Love it!!!

Great lights, portable, easy to use, and lightweight, only con is the power switch should be further up on the cord.

We use these for on location interviews and lighting. They are extremely portable, lightweight and easy to use. My only con is the power switch should be further up on the cord.

The Rifa-Lite eX makes a wonderful key light. I shot an interview the other day with my Canon XF100, and it was great! This all in one light is easy to set up and take down.

This is the 2nd one of these lights we've purchased to add to our kit. They work great for interviews because of the softness of the light.

Instant setup = more productivity

This fixture was included in the DV-Creator assortment and I have already bought a second one because it sets up so quickly, more like instantly. My starter softbox fluorescent fixtures served their purpose, but took 10 minutes to build each one on location, and nearly as long to put them away nicely.  This opens like an umbrella in less than 2 seconds, with the lamp already installed.  Another 10 seconds to put it on the stand and add the diffuser, youre done! First job I used these for (theatrical auditions), I gave myself the usual 45-minutes to get things setup (lights, muslin backdrop on stands, 2 cameras, mics, LPCM recorder) but was ready in 20-minutes with these lights and used the extra time to add another Lowel spot (from the DV kit) as a kicker and a room-tone mic.

Regret buying it

I own 14 soft boxes from at least 3 different manufacturers. Some fit tighter than others, but all have flexible rods that bend enough to unhook and disassemble. Absolutely no issues with any of my other boxes. This box, once put together, fits so tight it's nearly impossible to take back apart to pack up. In trying to disassemble I have torn the stitching on one side and decided to just hang it and leave it assembled for shoots. It's going to take up a lot of space when packing but I don't see an alternative.

question

What is the throw distance of the LC55 and is it ok to use a 750w bulb for more throw ?
Asked by: Anonymous
The maximum effective throw distance for the LC-55 is 10 feet. A 750 watt lamp is not recommended for use with this fixture as the softbox is too small to withstand the additional heat.

question

Do I need to purchase the Rifa balance bar to attach this light to a C-stand?
Asked by: Jeffrey H.
Im not sure what the balance bar is. The light comes with a baby receiver. You can put the light on the end of the c stand's arm or you can use a baby pin in the arm's head.... A Norm's pin.Hope that helps

question

What is the depth of the light once it is opened?
Asked by: Tyler S.
The light measuring from its base (bottom end of the soft box) is approx. 9 , leaving about 5 of space to the outer diffuser front cloth. The width (circumference) of the tube holder-cage is 2-1/2 .

Sometimes, I have trouble setting up. The lamp fixture will not slide back and click into place. I try again and again and the fixture wants to bounce back. Is there some trick that sometimes I forget to do????
Asked by: Jamie
Yes, there's a trick to it. When you slide the fixture back and it reaches the end of its travel (e.g., light box is fully opened), screw the little black knob on the side of the fixture slide till it's tight -- this knob is mounted in the top of the vertical clamp that mounts the light onto its stand. The knob will clinch down on the fixture slide, holding the light box in its fully open position. Hope this helps.
