    Smith-Victor Pro-5 reviews

Pro-5 2-Way Heavy Duty Fluid Tripod Panhead is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Only A Week Before It Began to Break Had a 22 lbs Rig on this head. First day out everything was fine. Second day the 3/8 Screw that was on the hot plate snapped off. Replaced it though nothing off it. 2 days later all the teeth on the one of the arms connecting to the head were completely stripped off from use. Every time I take it out I notice something else has broken or is close to breaking. Now it has a bad wobble one broken arm, two popped rivets, and the early signs of rust. Mine you I have only been using it for a month.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Heavy Duty Panhead I got one of these heads used, and out of warranty. SV was kind enough to sell me missing parts. The head is cast and feels solid, but it fails in comparison to my trusty Manfrotto 3063. This is not a back-packers head, and would be good in a permanent installation use, like for use in a small production studio. The pan handles are actually two separate tubes held together somewhat like the Manfrotto pan handles of similar size. My Pro-5 head has an intermittent problem whereby during panning, the head wobbles forward and back. I've written to SV about this and have had no response to date. I'm looking to replace this head, possibly with a Davis & Sanford fm18, which looks like the exact same head as the SV Pro-5. Unlike the Pro-5's five year warranty, the fm18 carries a 10 year warranty! When it works properly, the Pro-5 is great, especially with small dv-cams like the ag-dvc30, pv-gs150, and others. The sliding QR plate did not work well with my trusty old ag-456's, however. This head should work well on any set of heavy duty legs such as the Manfrotto 3046, Davis & Sanford ProVista 75, and similar tripod leg-sets. I suggest using only tripods that you either mount on a tripod dolly or spreader. Cheers!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from solid and smooth i bought as a replacement for an old (identical) head that was damaged a few times over through serious mis-use over the years. the head is solid and holds the weight well. the movement is fluid and smooth. i've been using a rig that is way too heavy and out of balance for it, and it is still holding up well. pair this with any compatible legs or ball mount kit for a solid, inexpensive pro-sumer video setup for smaller camcorders and simple DSLR setups.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heavy-duty is right ! Got this head to accommodate the weight of a JVC GY-HM 600U fully-loaded with on cam light/battery, shotgun mic, lav receiver and heavy thru-the-lens tablet teleprompter...between 25-30 lbs total. Was too much for my Manfrotto, but this Smith-Victor fluid head had no problem at all...smooth-as-silk. The dual pan arms nice, altho tightening screws could be better-positioned...get in the way of itself by design. Will tighten enough, but stop just short of being able to get super-tight...odd, but not a show-stopper. The quick-release plate better designed than most others, tons of flexibility mounting in almost any direction. Highly recommend this, and matching heavy-duty tripod legs---great product at a very reasonable price !
