Tele Vue EPL-40.0 overview

  • 1Description

Engineered to Al Nagler's uncompromising standards, the entry-level Tele Vue Plossl 40mm Eyepiece has one of the longest focal lengths in the series to produce a low magnification for both near and deep-sky observations.

It is made using diffraction-limiting high-index glass lenses in a 4-element/2-group configuration to keep light on-axis and reduce astigmatism and edge-aberrations across its generous 43° apparent field of view. Fully multi-coated optics, blackened lens elements, and anti-reflection threads complement the optical components to improve contrast and light transmission, while limiting its loss. Its exceptional 28mm eye relief allows users the room to back off from the eyecup for a more comfortable viewing experience with a reduced risk of accidental contact with the eyepiece lens which can cause vibrations and interfere with views. Ideal for fast-focal ratio OTAs, the eyepiece features a standard 1.25" barrel to be compatible with the most popular size of focuser and accessories, a convenient fold-down rubber eyecup, and a rubberized textured collar to ensure a secure grip when handling it.

    Tele Vue EPL-40.0 reviews

    Plossl 40mm Eyepiece (1.25") is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Get the 32mm instead. This is a great eyepiece but the 32mm has 50 degree FOV and this has 43. Then the 55mm goes back to 50. If you can accommodate the 55mm (2) and want wider get that. Otherwise the 32mm seems just as bright by the eye. The problem with the smaller field is when comparing the 32 to the 40 is it looks almost the same. My thought buying this for an F15 and F12 maksutovs was to get a slightly wider field and lower power.. but since the FOV is 43 it doesn't really help in that department. It's just a very slightly smaller image. Usually lower power you can get more in the view but not really the case between these two. I have a pair of the 32s and a pair of these 40s for binoviewing. I almost never use the 40. It doesn't make sense but the 32 always seems brighter to me also. This may or may not be the case in other scopes so take with a grain of salt. Hope helps someone. Aside from all that the usual Televue quality is there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Quality but not for an f/5 Scope In trying to get a wider field of view and less magnification for my 130mm f/5 reflector, I chose this product. It is not right for my application. The exit pupil = (40mm/f5) becomes 8mm, which is not desirable (5mm is about maximum for a senior like myself.) Also, the eye relief is 28mm which is uncomfortably great. So I had to return the product, which B&H makes easy and painless.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple, High-Quality Craftsmanship I use this eyepiece w/ a 8 Meade SCT for viewing large and dim astronomical targets such as Andromeda and various nebulae. Tele Vue optics are very high-quality and the images produced are crisp and clean.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from it's good I take it in a 5-inch telescope, it looks good. I compared it with a Celestron eyepiece and saw no noticeable differences
