Tele Vue EAP-08.0 overview

  • 1Description

Engineered to Al Nagler's uncompromising standards but at an entry-level price, the Tele Vue Plossl 8mm Eyepiece has the shortest focal length in the series to produce the highest magnification for near and deep-sky observations.

It is made using diffraction-limiting high-index glass lenses in a 4-element/2-group configuration to keep light on-axis and reduce astigmatism and edge-aberrations across its generous 50° apparent field of view. Fully multi-coated optics, blackened lens elements, and anti-reflection threads complement the optical components to improve contrast and light transmission, while limiting its loss. Ideal for fast-focal ratio OTAs, the eyepiece features a standard 1.25" barrel to be compatible with the most popular size of focuser and accessories, with a convenient fold-down rubber eyecup. This model of the Plossl series is parfocal with all Tele Vue Group 'B' eyepieces, allowing you to change compatible eyepieces without having to refocus — saving time and limiting vibrations.

    Plossl 8mm Eyepiece (1.25") is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb quality As someone who's been involved in amatuer astronomy for a long time, eyepieces had always been an area I skimped on so I decided to start down the road of quality. Tele Vue eyepieces are pricey, but they're well worth the money. This 8mm Plossl (and a new dielectric diagonal) probably almost doubled the view quality in an Orion ST80. The stars are pinpoints with much better contrast versus the included eyepieces. I also tried it out in a Celestron C6 and likewise, improved the views quite a bit. If you're looking for a great jump into the Tele Vue line, these are a great starting point.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well Made solid product I bought this simple plossl to replace a fancy 7 lens 8mm eyepiece that was heavy and hard to use comfortably. The Tele Vue 8mm has a 6 mm eye relief and gives me a 1.6 mm exit pupil, which makes viewing comfortable. The 7 lens ED unit required my eye to be exactly in the right place or beaning would occur instantly. The Tele Vue is light, easy to handle and easy to see through. I gave it 4 stars only because the view through it is less bright than through my other 8mm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great eyepiece for the money! Recently, I purchased a 120mm Celestron refractor and, with it, three Celestron Xcel eyepieces. But I was disappointed with views of the Moon (my main target since I live under very light polluted skies). Views lacked contrast and light scattering was distracting. I thought the problem was the scope. But I decided to try a televue 8mm eyepiece. What a difference!!! Light scattering was gone and contrast was significantly improved. It was like I had a new and better telescope! I wish Televue made a 5mm Plossl because I would order it in a second.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Good Eyepiece This is my first Tele Vue eyepiece. I purchased it because I wanted a good quality medium/high power eyepiece for Lunar and Planetary viewing. My first impression was that the fit and finish is excellent. It's just a bit smoother and more precise than many of my other eyepieces. It has a very high quality look and feel.I used it on a night of decent seeing and transparency in my 98mm refractor. It showed excellent sharpness and contrast on the moon. The Cassini division was very distinct on Saturn, as was the planet's shadow on the rings. It carries with it the usual plossl caveats, relatively narrow field of view (vs. the widefield eyepieces that flood the market these days) and short eye relief. It is very good at what it does and the fit/finish and optical quality is very good. The cap for the end with the eye-cup only fits with the eye cup raised. With the eye cup folded back the cap doesn't fit over the rolled up rubber eye cup. After some use when you unfold the eye cup it's usually stretched just a bit from being folded and it's a bit fiddly to get the cap back over it in the dark, but it's a really nit-picky problem. Definitely recommended.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An excellent eyepiece for high magnification For me this is a “special-use” eyepiece. It generates quite high magnification (350X) in my CPC11 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, so the atmosphere has to be both stable and quite clear to use it to good advantage. If used while viewing through atmospheric haze or turbulence, it just provides empty magnification. I have a fair number of such “good” nights at my Arizona residence, but fewer at my Iowa residence. On the good nights, the eyepiece offers a distinct advantage over my next-shortest-focal-length eyepiece, a 15mm Plossl. This 8mm Plossl is most useful on close double stars, but it also improves viewing on objects such as planetary nebulae, lunar features, Jupiter’s cloud patterns, and Saturn’s rings. It is useful to view Uranus, Neptune, and Jupiter’s four large moons as disks, rather than as points of light. Eye relief is only 6mm with this eyepiece, so one must remove eyeglasses to see the full field of view. I'm not an expert judge of such things, but the quality of manufacture and the optical coatings seems excellent. Overall I’ve been quite pleased with this eyepiece, and I’m glad I bought it.
