Nikon TC-17E II Reviews

Amazed !!

My observations are preliminary since I've just received my converter & not done any serious work yet, However... I have taken some exposures with this unit with my AF-S Nikkor 300mm 1:4 PF ED and my AF-S Nikkor 70-200 mm 1:4 ED mounted on my Nikon Df camera body. The results exceeded my exceptions, tack sharp, beautiful colors, etc I can't wait until spring when I can test this unit fully for the wildlife photography I concentrate on.

Magic

Im using it on 300mm F4 (none vr) with D500 and 70-200 2.8FL. In both cases it worked well . The image quality was good (over the expected) . The auto focus was a bit slower withe the 300mm F4 which become 6.7.

Very happy!

I have the tc-14e III but needed some more reach so I wouldn't have to crop so much when photographing osprey. I decided to give this teleconverter a try. Very happy with the results. I used this lens with the Nikon D850 and the Nikon 500mm f/4e lens. I had no issues with camera/lens hunting for the subject. I didn't try it in low light. Juvenile osprey in flight.

This teleconvertor works as promised

I am using my TC-17 E II on a Nikon 70-200 f/4, mounted on a D500. The unit is reasonably small and light; it doesn't make the lens much more cumbersome. All automatic functions are maintained, and all displays reflect the effectively reduced aperture, including the images' metadata. Autofocus is as fast or seemingly as fast as with the native lens. As other reviewers have pointed out, there is a sharpness penalty although it is manageable. I have to almost pixel peep to see loss of sharpness. For the ways that I display my photographs, it is a non-issue. So all in all, this is a versatile piece of equipment that lets me use a relatively small and relatively light lens and get to 340mm rather than carry a considerably heavier lens to get to the same focal length. The tradeoff is the slight sharpness penalty; that tradeoff is acceptable to me.

Don't even miss the stop and half of light

Paired with my Nikon 200*400, this allows me greater reach and I have noticed any issue with the autofocus using this teleconverter, Great additional piece to my camera bag.

Pleasantly Surprised

I've been using a TC-14E III to get additional reach with my 300mm f/4 PF for a couple years. With airshow season quickly approaching, I decided to give the TC-17E II a shot. There is a noticeable change in focus speed and higher frequency of hunting on my D500 when shooting wildlife. I feel that the overall image quality is a hair off from the 1.4x, which can be improved quite a lot in post. Obviously, these more aggressive teleconverters are designed for the fast f/2.8 glass, but I think the performance with the 300mm f/4 can be managed in the right situations. I can't wait to take this to some airshows!

Really pleased with astrophotography images

I am quite happy with the TC-17. While it works with both camera bodies and three of my five lenses (check comparability before your buy), my primary use is with a D750 and a 300 mm f/4 prime lens. This combination gives me 510 mm with a maximum aperture of f/6.7, as the cost of the TC-17 is 1.5 stops. Included is a photo taken while mounted to a tracker and stopped down 1 additional stop to f/9.5. (The image is about 2/3 of the full frame and a stack of ISO 200 exposures for the stars and ISO 3200 exposures for the nebulas. As you can see with the rays around the larger stars, I still overexposed the darker frames – easy to do in Orion with all of the very bright stars imbedded in gases and dust. Even wide open the 300 mm lens itself is great for terrestrial photos but a little soft in the corners for astrophotography. The TC-17 makes these soft edges slightly, but not much, worse, but stopping down one stop to f/9.5 makes everything in the frame quite sharp. I have seen no loss anywhere with landscape photos, e.g., moon rises, taken with the TC-17 and any of my lenses.

IS THE TC-17E II 1.7X TELECONVERTER WORK WITH NIKON 600 WITH A AF-S NIKKOR 70-300MM 1:4.5-5.6G LENS. THANK YOU

The Nikon teleconverters are only compatible with a select number of Nikons professional level telephoto lenses. None would be compatible with the AF-S 70-300mm lens, unfortunately.

Is there any one who can compare the performance of the TC-1.7 II versus the TC2.0 III on the 300/2.8G VR II lens?
Asked by: David H.
The performance of the TC17 II versus the TC20 III paired with a 300mm f/2.8G VR II lens can vary depending on whether you’re using a Nikon FX format camera or DX format camera. The main idea would be that the TC17 II would reduce less light coming into the camera compared to the TC20 III.

You would need to look at a third party teleconverter to use with that lens, though you will likely lose autofocus. http://bhpho.to/M4gZhs
