Norman SSB12-BP overview

  • 1Description

You can now get quality softbox lighting from your battery portable flash system. Designed for Norman LH2 and LH52 portable heads, the 12 inch square SSB12-BP softbox can also be used on most Quantum Q Flash and Lumedyne lampheads.

Much like the Norman Studio Softbox design, this unit "pops-up" like an umbrella. No loose parts or assembly required, except for the removable front diffusion panel that attaches easily.

No speed ring adapter is required. Each Softbox attaches to the lamphead like a standard reflector. On Norman lampheads, just position over the flashtube and tighten the reflector locking screw.

Norman SSB12-BP reviews

812696 Softbox - 12 x 12" is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great way to expand the usage of your Norman flash unit. I purchased a Norman 400B for photographing dirt track races at night. While it is great for that I was wanting to find a way to get more value out of my investment. This softbox is a great tool to help do just that. As I shoot the Norman on a flash bracket I have the needed clearance to shot the Norman with the 12x12 softbox attached. It does a great job softening the light output so that I can shoot very tight shots as well as individual and group shots. It is easy to set up and it knocks down into a very portable package. With this addition it is like have a speedlight on steroids and it is a great way to get a lot more value out of the my Norman.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very good for the price! Bought 2 and used for a wedding on a small yacht with my Quantum T2 and T4d Qflashes. The quality of the light is terrific. They are very easy to set up and great for moving around in confined spaces. I was a bit disappointed that although there are loops for an inner baffle, it is not included. I cannot find this accessory anywhere, including Norman's website. That being said, the light appears to be very even. Lastly, on Qflashes, the softbox doesn't attach squarely, but rather diagonally, so that the corners line up above and below the flash, like a diamond shape or rotated 45 degrees. The speed ring doesn't rotate, and there isn't a way to fudge the attachment on the Qflashes that I could figure out. This is not a big deal for me, but something to keep in mind for Qflash users.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nifty little box Really easy to take anywhere! It's pretty small but cranks out a nice even light. It's size makes it very portable. We used it to front light a family of seven adults with strong backlighting this weekend with excellent results. The mount works very well and stays put on the strobe head.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Norman is always good, though it could use a more solid case I have several Norman softboxes in multiplel sizes. The convenience of the umbrella mechanism is great...but there's also the fragility of the internal parts that makes me wish it had some kind of sturdy case (a tube?) to protect it. I don't feel comfortable throwing this into a bag with my lights and stands for fear they will end up bent. The internal clasp mechanism of this light is made of plastic which I hope wears well, but that may be a concern as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile Softbox I use this softbox interchangeably--on an LH2 in the studio for a hairlight, and on camera (with a bracket) as a flash diffuser (fits my Sunpak 120j). It also works well off camera as an on location main light (again, with the 120j). The softbox is easy up and easy down and sturdy enough to last a long time if you don't sit on it or try to walk through walls with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Norman Softbox I'm torn on this one. Yes its a softbox and yes it fits the 200C strobe head. In doing one well, it does the other poorly. If you have to have a softbox, buy a real, full size box and save your money. Jury's still out...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Fits on my Sunpak 120J beautifully and is so light weight, Awesome for the 'Run'n'Gun' shooting and the light it gives is soft enough but has just the right amount of edginess.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from very easy to use i use this with my Lumedyne lights and it's perfect. It fits into the light, just as the snoot would. It's easy to fold up and re-assemble. Seems pretty durable.
