Sto-Fen OM-EY overview

  • 1Description

Enhance the quality of light coming from your on-camera flash with the OM-EY Omni-Bounce Diffuser from Sto-Fen. Designed for select flashes, this diffuser slides onto the flash head and will diffuse the light output, producing softer shadows and a more natural glow rather than the harsher effect created when using a direct flash. The diffuser also helps to provide even coverage across the entire frame which is especially useful for wide-angle shooting

Sto-Fen OM-EY reviews

OM-EY Omni-Bounce Diffuser is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 259.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Softening the View A friend recommended I try doing Off-Camera Flash (OCF) shooting. I purchased the Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce OM-EY along with the Interfit Metal Umbrella Bracket with Adjustable Flash Shoe (also from B&H) - for an outdoor photo shoot this past weekend. It fit perfectly snug on my Canon 580ex flash. No worries about it falling off. I then mounted my flash on a light pole and went on location. I was very happy with the light temperature on my photos. My subject's skin tone looked very good overall. It is a quick and inexpensive alternative to taking pro lights and umbrellas out on site. It's a great product and the price is right!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from How I fixed the poor fit with 580 EX II I love the way the bounce works. Great product, but like many other reviews, mine fit so tightly I could only get it on about 20% of the way. Here is how I fixed the problem: (You obviously have to be extremely cautious not to get your flash wet, so do this at your own risk). I put two quart size zip lock freezer bags over the end of the flash. I held the diffuser only (not the flash) in a pan of boiling water for about 30 seconds or so with a pair of tongs until it softened. With a leather work glove on, I shook the excess water off of the Sto-Fen and then pushed it onto the flash covered with the two zip lock bags. (My first attempt with one bag left the fit still too tight, but it may be safer to try one bag first). I let it sit until it was cool, then dried it completely. It had formed to the shape of the flash and it now fits perfectly. I hope this helps others with the same problem.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Doesn't fit the 580EXII as advertised. This product needs to be redesigned for the 580EXII. I own three other Omni-Bounce units for the other flashes I own, but this one just doesn't fit the 580EXII, even though it's supposed to. If you force it, you can stick it on only about 1/8, when it should really go on about 1/2. I found that if you gently heat the Omni-Bounce in hot water, you can stretch it out with your hands. Eventually I got it to fit like a glove, but for such a simple product, this thing should work right out of the box. Once you have it attached to the flash, it works as designed. It's simple to use but it doesn't give you any means of adjusting the ratio of light that is thrown up or forward. I found that if you slightly extend the catch light card that's built into the 580, then slip the omni-bounce on the flash, you can get an extra 1/3 to 1/2 stop of light thrown forward. Until this product is redesigned to fit the 580EXII better, I can't recommend this product. It's just a single molded piece of plastic... Fix your molds Sto-Fen!!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Too tight, needed to be stretched out. I've purchased 3 of these diffusers for the Yongnuo - YN 560 IV speed lites. First I could NOT even forcefully put them on to either, so I had to use a blow-drier to soften them up enough to push them onto the speed lites. After that they work, but still tight. Not a good fit though, probably have to do another blow-dry action. Other than that, they do soften and distribute the light nicely, as they should.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must have accessory I use this little gadget mainly for macro and portrait work. When you have it on the light emitting from the flash is diffused which gives you a more flattering light to illuminate your subjects with. Unless you are going for a very shadowy, high-contrast, image this diffuser can save the day. It is very light weight and easy to pack in small places, so you should never have a good reason to leave it behind. Sometimes it is the simple things that make the biggest difference in a photo, and using this can defiantly make very noticeable differences.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An old workhorse I, and many photographers I know, have used the Omni-Bounce for years, getting great results. Although I have tried new devices from time to time, I always come back to this one for its simplicity. What keeps it from getting 5 stars is that it is cumbersome to get fast, attractive vertical results near backgrounds where the shadows are obvious. For switching from horizontal to vertical the Lightsphere is better, but that device is bulky and prone to fall of the flash.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent Works well. Certainly better than bare flash but no substitute for off camera flash w/ umbrella, softbox, or reflector. Initially does not fit well as other reviewers have stated. I held it over a stove top burner for about 2 seconds to soften it then I pushed it over my 580 EXii and let it harden. If your not comfortable with an open flame you can use a pot of boiling water to achieve the same result. Despite its imperfections, the Omni-Bounce is a must for on location shooting where any other equipment would be prohibitive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Buy for the money This device works well. In addition to this I also have two different models/versions of the Gary Fong Lightsphere. Comparing the two together, you'd have to look very closely to see any difference with the lighting effects. The Gary Fong Lightsphere does create a softer light, but at 3 times the price. It fits the 580EX like a glove, east to slide on & off but it's very a tight fit on the 580EXII because the the head on the 580EXII is slightly larger making it difficult to remove & replace in a hurry.
