Nikon C-PL3L overview

  • 1Description

Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun. Filter factor is between 2.3 and 2.8 (approx. +1.3 stops).

This is a drop-in circular polarizing filter for the Nikon 200mm f/2.0G AF-S VR lens. This filter is externally rotatable.

Circular polarizers are specifically designed for use with auto-focus SLR cameras (They will also work on manual systems without problems).

Nikon C-PL3L reviews

52mm Circular Polarizer (C-PL3L) Glass Filter - Drop-In is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for outdoor sports shots. I use this polarizer to remove summer haze from my outdoor sports portraits. Rugged construction, fits snugly. You rotate the element with a thumbwheel once it's in the unit. Does a good job of keeping out dust, but it does introduce an opening in the lens that you should protect from the elements. Provides an easier way to adjust a polarizer than one on the end of the lens. There are a number of 52mm polarizing filters made by Nikon, and a number of lenses that specify that size. There are even multiple Nikon lenses that specify 52mm *drop-in* filters. Pricey, no known alternatives, but it will improve your daytime shots. Take note that this model only works with the AF-S VR NIKKOR 200mm f/2G IF-ED, and further this polarizer is the only one that will work with this lens. If you are intending to purchase the 52mm drop-in filter for say the 200-400 lens, you need a different model.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great With telephoto lenses a polarizer is essential to remove glare and darken sky backgrounds. for the 200 f/2 it offers even greater subject separation by heightening contrasts this way. I've found this specialized polarizer to be very effective. It's color neutral and offer a fine degree of polarization. It does dim images by two stops compared to newer polarizers this offer only 1.5 stops of light loss. You can't choose to use another polarizer due to the specialized purpose of this one. But it does the job superbly and is a great accesory for the Nikkor lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 'the' CPL for the 200/f2! The lens ships with the clear drop-in and this is the only CPL that can be used with the 200/f2. It does its job perfectly, has a wheel to rotate the CPL inside the drop-in housing. But yes, remember that it is on all the time - you cannot simply grab the lens and shoot away your fleeting moment without remembering it is on and cutting away a lot of light!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Serves the Purpose for Special Conditions As a circular polarizer this works great. Easy to use. Most of the time the lens itself is so good that polarizer is not needed and it taxes light stops. I use it seldom when doing landscapes, distance photography, or near water. Otherwise, I prefer to have this off. There is no other choice than this particular one, but good news is that this is a great product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Expensive, Top of the line product. I purchased this filter for the 200mm F/.2. I'll be traveling to the Caribbean and you know how hot the light is there . Since the 200 is my prime lens, I needed to be able to rotate the polarizer. This is the only option, and obvious by the price and quality of the nikon optics, I wanted the best on my best lens. Dig in and buy it, It's not much when you take into consideration how much you paid for your lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worthwhile Purchase If you're going to spend the money to get one of the lenses that this polarizer is intended to be used with, it's penny-wise and pound-foolish not to buy this polarizer at the same time. Although I don't see myself using it on a regular basis, when you do need it there is no other substitute. Mild polarizing effect, not as dramatic as some others that I own, but still adds saturation and clarity in some situations.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Superb Quality Not many (any) other options. But, this is a very high quality piece of glass. My ONLY beef is with the case. It is huge. Luckily, I had an old 77 mm Nikon filter case sitting around. Wrapped the 52mm filter in some microfiber cloth and put it in that case. The big plastic case that comes with the filter is far too large to put in a camera bag, particularly the one that comes with the 200mm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nikon quality I own a similar product for the 200-400 VR f/4. Easily swapped out with the standard filter, gives you the ability to have a circ. polarizer. Nikon quality through and through.
