Capture quality sound indoors or outside for your next indie film, TV shoot, or documentary project with the Rode NTG1 shotgun microphone. The durable and lightweight high-grade aluminum housing is finished in hard-wearing epoxy paint to withstand the stress of location recording.

Quality Sound Capture
The combination of the NTG1's 8.6" long body and supercardioid polar pattern yields focused front-facing directionality and enhanced attenuation of sound entering from the sides. Its low self-noise of 18 dBA and sensitive condenser element communicate detailed audio unburdened by the hiss that plagues many low-cost microphones. Plus, its balanced output allows longer cable runs than most camera-mount shotgun microphones.
Phantom Powered
Thanks to its 3-pin XLR output and compliance with 24V or 48V phantom power, the NTG1 is compatible with a variety of handheld audio recorders, field recorders, and mixer adapters, as well as built-in preamps on many camcorders and cinema cameras.
Ideal for Boompole Mounting
The NTG1 includes a mic clip for easy placement on a mic stand or boompole. Alternatively, mount the NTG1 in the Rode SM4-R shockmount or Rode PG2-R pistol grip (both available separately) to impede the transfer of vibrations in boompole or handheld applications.
Windscreen Minimizes Wind Noise
The NTG1 has a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of handling noise and wind noise in indoor or outdoor environments, consider the Rode Blimp furry windshield and shockmount suspension system (available separately).

The Rode NTG1 is an epic mic. I am no professional but use this mic for all my camcorder needs. Very light weight, supreme sensitivity and crystal clear recordings! It came in a very nice zippered pouch with a foam cover and a free Dead Cat cover to boot! Very Pleased!

I wouldn't consider myself a professional nor have I experience with any other shotguns. HOWEVER, I don't need to be a pro to tell that the noise level is very low and that this mic produces very good sound. I bought it for personal projects that I won't be making money on and it's been worth every dollar (well, shekel)! It's small and light which makes putting on a camera simple and easy. I just finished filming an indie short with it and got great results. I was able to get very usable sound from about 10' away. If you're not a pro, like myself, and you're hesitant about this one I'd say go for it! I can't recommend it enough!

Love it!

question

Can this microphone be used with a AA battery for source of power also?
Asked by: kawame d.
No. It uses phantom power exclusively. The NTG2 can use batteries.

How can this microphone claim so much greater ...

How can this microphone claim so much greater directionality (down 14 dB at 60 degrees off-axis) than other shotgun microphones of similar physical length. Is it a typo?
Asked by: Phil
I am honestly surprised at how good this mic is compared to the NTG2 and my Zoom shotgun mics. It is just stronger, cleaner and yes, more directional. It's still just s shotgun mic, not a lav. But it is impressive. I was surprised.

question

Is this mic compatible with DSLR cameras? I have a Canon 5D mark III and am looking for on on-camera shotgun mic.
Asked by: Karina A.
The NTG1 requires power in order to operate that is supplied by the device the mic is connected to. unfortunately this is not able to be supplied by the cameras mini jack output. For the 5D mkIII and similar cameras you will need an additional adapter that is able to provide the power to the mic such as a Beachtek DXA-SLR ULTRA, which will allow the connection of 2 mics, level control, metering and limiters to protect from overload. Alternatively a battery powered mic will also work directly connected. The NTG-2 would be an example.

question

Does this microphone have to be mounted on a camera? We are using a teleprompter so we need a mic that can stand alone and not have to be mounted to our camera.
Asked by: Sandra M.
We use this as a boom mic which is on a boompole (fish pole) connected to a C-stand that hangs over the talent (speaker). The C stand is weighed down by two 30LB sand bags. You will also need a Matthelini clamp to attach the boom to the C-stand.

question

What is the difference between NTG 1 and NTG 2
Asked by: Nachiketh
I have both. The NTG2 uses a AA battery. Ive seen specs that claim there is a tiny bit of difference in performance but it depends on your size restrictions and phantom power requirements. The NTG1 is great on most of my cams and in podcasts where the space might be an issue and upplying power to it isnt a problem. Recently I started.using a Tascam 70D the power drain is so bad on it I will often switch to the NTG2 to save battery on the mixer/recorder.

question

How far from the subject this mic can record with quality? Is it good for advertising production?
Asked by: Rafael R.
Lots of variables here, but generally you should be within a couple of feet of the sound source - less if it is a noisy environment. This is more an aspect of proper location sound technique in general, rather than the quality of this particular mic. This mic is capable of very good quality sound, but even the most expensive mic will sound terrible if it is 10 ft from the subject.
