Offering a comfortable wide-angle field of view in a small size, the NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 from Nikon is a manual focus prime well-suited for landscape, nature, and documentary shooting. Its modest f/2.8 maximum aperture strikes a balance between its sleek form factor and being fast enough for working in low-light conditions. Additionally, the optical design uses a Close Range Correction system, which maintains consistent image quality and sharpness from the minimum focusing distance of 8.3" to infinity.

What is the difference between this lens and the 28mm f/2.8 that is $286.95?
The Nikon NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 Lens, B&H # NI2828, is a fully manual Nikon lens originally released in 1981 designed for use with Nikon 35mm SLR film cameras that used the Nikon F-mount (though it is still compatible for use with the current F-mount Nikon cameras). The Nikon AF NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8D Lens, B&H # NI2828DAF, is an older autofocus lens released in 1994. It will autofocus with Nikon DSLR cameras that have a built-in autofocus motor, such as the Nikon D7000-series and higher cameras. The older Nikon NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 Lens has a better optical lens design with 8 optical elements in 8 groups and a closer 8.27" minimum focus distance (with slightly more magnification at the minimum focus distance), while the newer Nikon AF NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8D Lens has 6 optical elements in 6 groups, and has a minimum focus distance of 9.84". Optically, the older Nikon NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 Lens would be the higher quality optical lens.

question
can i use this with my nikon d5200?
I bought a Nikon Df because I am able to use my Nikon lenses from my old F3. I would assume but, I am not positive that you would be able to use this lens. I bought the same lens and it is compatible with my Df, a digital camera. I hope this helps.

question
Why not 'A' Mode? Nikon's lens compatibility chart says that this lens supports A mode and metering (but not 3D) when focal length and max aperture are specified in non-CPU data. Answers to the other question here say that it won't work. I am confused.
Only cameras that have an 'aperture-ring feeler' are able to determine the aperture of manual focus lenses and thus use the 'A' (or M) modes. If a camera doesn't have an aperture-ring feeler, there is no way for the camera to know what aperture has been set on the manual focus lens. Auto-focus lenses don't rely on an aperture feeler because they have built in CPU chips and this information is conveyed electronically. The minimum level of DX camera that has an aperture feeler is the D7xxx series, including the D7000. All FX cameras have aperture feelers.

Is this lens the same as the AI-S lens which has been in production since 1981? Specifically I'm wondering if there have been any improvements since the original was introduced?
They have not made any updates to this lens. The updates would only be newer versions such as auto focus lenses.
