Nikon DK-20C Correction Eyepiece for Rectangular-Style Viewfinder (-2.0)
Key Features
  • Fits Select Nikon SLR and DSLR Cameras
The DK-20C -2.0 Correction Eyepiece for Rectangular-Style Viewfinder from Nikon allows you to optimize your SLR/DSLR viewfinder's sharpness in conjunction with your individual eyesight. Nikon SLR/DSLR cameras (without built-in adjustable eyepiece correction) have a base diopter value of minus one. Minus one is considered the optimum starting point for the majority of SLR/DSLR users with normal vision. The combination of the camera's viewfinder components and a clear (standard) eyepiece form a virtual image of a subject on the camera's focusing screen that is the approximate equivalent of a viewing distance of one meter.

Following cataract surgery I am slightly near sighted in the eye is use for photography. I have a Nikon 5200 which has a small diopter adjustment wheel on the side of the eye piece but it doesn't go quite far enough. Should I get a plus 2 or a minus 2 correction eyepiece?

Depends on if you're near-sighted (you'll need minus) or far-sighted (you'll need plus). What I did in order to determine the strength I needed was go to an optometrist and tell them exactly what you need the prescription for. Tell them to test for one meter distance. It is going to be different than a prescription for regular lenses such as for driving or watching a movie. For instance, I have a different prescription for driving than for working at my desk on a computer. Get yourself tested for one meter distance. My prescription turned out to be minus 2 point something but I couldn't get one that specific so I rounded up to minus three and it's perfect. They don't cost that much, very well worth the expense. Also be sure it's designed to be compatible with your specific camera.
