Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

HN-28 Lens Hood (77mm Screw-In) for 80-200mm f/2.8 ED D-AF Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replaces Butterfly Hood on 70-200 I purchased this to replace the clip on butterfly hood that comes stock with the 70-200 AF-S lens. I prefer a screw in hood for event photography, as the stock hood has a tendency to come unlatched after brushing against, well, pretty much anything. This stays in place securely, and gives excellent protection against bumps and such. The second reason for replacing the stock hood with a screw in hood is that it then becomes easy to use a polarizing filter with the hood attached, something that's pretty much impossible with the stock clip on hoods.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from OEM Hood I got this product to replace the one that didn't come with the 80-200 that I received. It works like the OEM hood and I have the same complaint as others that I can't have the lens cap on at the same time the hood is on. Slightly annoying but I won't have any glare in my shots now so I can't complain to much!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Next to worthless There may be a use where this product exceeds the HB-7 bayonet mount but I can't think of it. I only bought it because B&H was of of stock on the HB-7. When I received the HN-28 I screwed it on and figured out you couldn't put the lens cap on with the hood in place. I unscrewed the hood, put it back in the box and returned it. The HB-7 is far superior - it can be stored on the lens by installing it backwards, very fast to install, you can use the lens cap with it and it is 25%-30% cheaper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect hood I am a photojournalist and push my equipment to its limits often. Cheap lens hoods have always broken. Metal hoods are by far the best. This is perfect for my old, trusty lens which I've had for nearly 20 years. B&H's service is almost always perfect, too!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good product, tight tolerance on threads The hood works as it should. Getting it attached is tough and you can't have it on with the lens cap on. The threads are very tight and secure--possibly too tight as it might be a problem of stripping them, but so far so good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Takes a beating..... almost! I finally had to buy a replacement hood for my 80-200mm. I finally bent it really good. I've had the original for about 10 years. The replacement will work just fine, as long as I don't run into another videographer again. Just glad B&H carried this item.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More expensive, Yes; worth it, Yes. I use this hood on my 80-200mmm Nikkor D-AF zoom, to photograph indoor performances of various kinds. Most of the time, there's light coming from every direction...I needed this hood, because every small improvement adds up to a better post production.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get one for your 80-200 The 80-200 lens does not come with any hood, for some reason. I bought HN-28 together with the lens, and I am very happy with the purchase. Serves both as a protector for the lens front element and helps reduce flare.
